Tax Free Week Continues In Maryland
A tax holiday on clothing, shoes, and backpacks is going on through Saturday in Maryland to help families save money on back-to-school purchases. Clothing and shoes up to $100 in price will be exempt from the state’s 6% sales tax. Brooke Lierman, Maryland State Comptroller, spoke to WCBC News about the tax holiday, saying that though the state loses out on tax revenue, it benefits the state’s citizens and local business owners.
3 arrested in Columbia Street disturbance
On Tuesday, August 13th, 2024, at approximately 4:31 am the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 300 Block of Columbia Street for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, Officers encountered a large group of individuals in the area creating the disturbance. As Officers were completing the investigation, Haily Moon was observed damaging a vehicle. Officers attempted to place Moon under arrest but were then obstructed and assaulted by Tavon Gray. After a brief struggle, Officers were able to place Gray and Moon under arrest. On Tuesday, August 13th, 2024, at approximately 3:38 pm, an Officer with the Cumberland Police Department was on patrol in the area of the downtown mall when he observed a male involved with controlled dangerous substance use. The Officer confronted the male, who was later identified as Javis Bohrer, about observing controlled dangerous substances on his person. Officers did locate a baggie of suspected Methamphetamine as well as other drug-related paraphernalia on Bohrer’s person. Baltimore Avenue Trespassing arrest
On Tuesday, August 13th, 2024, at approximately 6:52 am the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 400 Block of Baltimore Avenue for the report of trespassing. Upon arrival, Officers observed two individuals who had been previously advised not to be at the property as the City of Cumberland declared the property unfit for human habitation. As a result, Scott Levine and Brittany Loscig were placed under arrest for trespassing. Annual State Park and Trail Passport
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources provides an annual state park and trail pass that makes accessing the state’s parks more affordable. The pass grants access to 900 miles of trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding, as well as water access, camping facilities as well as a ten percent discount on state-operated concessions and boat rentals. For Marylanders the pass costs seventy-five dollars and one hundred dollars for out-of-state visitors.
Overnight Paving Scheduled
North Centre Street between Hanover and Market Streets will be closed for overnight paving to fix damage caused by a waterline break. The work will start this evening at 7pm. Signage will be in place to direct vehicles around the worksite during the closure. Traffic is expected to be restored after work is completed at 6am Thursday morning.
Kitchen Fire Extinguished Quickly
The preliminary cause of a fire at a Friendsville residence has been deemed accidental. Fire crews responded to a residence on Dixon Road late Monday evening. A resident was attempting to use the stove and turned on the wrong burner which ignited nearby combustibles. Smoke alarms in the home activated. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control and no injuries were reported.
Linden Street Trespassing arrest
On Tuesday, August 13th, 2024, at approximately 4:16 pm the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 500 Block of Linden Street for a trespassing complaint. Upon arrival, Officers met with the complainant who advised that Randy Wayne Miller had trespassed on the property. Officers made contact with Miller who was advised not to return to the property. While on scene, Miller was served with a criminal summons issued by the Allegany County District Court for trespassing and harassment. Representative Hoyer Recovering From Stroke
Maryland Democrat Steny Hoyer is recovering from what is being called a mild stroke. The Congressman is expected to return to his duties on Capital Hill sometime next week. The stroke occurred Sunday evening and Hoyer, who is 85, sought medical treatment. The House is in its August recess until next week.
