Voting Open for USA Today Poll
Even the Governor of Maryland is encouraging residents to vote for Allegany County in the USA Today 10Best poll. The Governor posted on his social media outlets Wednesday that the county has been nominated in the category of “Best Places To Visit for Fall” and encouraged Marylanders to go vote for the travel award. Last year, Allegany County finished number two in the contest as one of the best places in the United States to visit during Fall. Voting runs through September 9th at 10best.usatoday.com
State Police Arrest Pennsylvania Man For Attempted Murder
Maryland State Troopers arrested a Pennsylvania man today on attempted murder and gun charges following a reported road rage incident in Frederick County. The accused is identified as Bryant Paradine, 37, of Littlestown, Pennsylvania. Paradine is currently charged with attempted murder, use of a gun in commission of a felony, and other related offenses. Paradine was arrested this evening, transported to the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack for processing, and is now awaiting an initial appearance before a district court commissioner. Bench Warrant Served
On Tuesday, August 13th, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a Bench Warrant on Corinne L. Devyak. The Allegany County District Court issued the warrant due to Devyak’s failure to appear at her trial scheduled for August 12, 2024. The original charge of disorderly conduct stemmed from an incident on May 14, 2024, where Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 200 Block of Maryland Avenue in the early morning hours for the report of a disturbance. Community Development Grant
The Maryland Department of Housing announced more than $2.9 million in grants through the federal Community Development Block Grant program for Fiscal Year 2025 for projects in Western Maryland. Included are infrastructure upgrades to separate combined sewer lines and eliminate overflow in the City of Frostburg. Frostburg, Maryland, Mayor Todd Logsdon says the funding will enable Frostburg to continue their projects on combined sewer overflow.
Sports Book Revenue Continues To Grow
July 2024 was the fourth-best single month in contributions to the state of Maryland for sports book wagering. $6.2 million dollars in taxes came to the state in July – that money goes to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund which supports public education programs. Statewide, players wagered $333 million dollars across retail and mobile betting sites. Winnings paid to players totaled $290 million dollars. Since Maryland’s sports wagering program began in 2021, over $97 million dollars has been given to the state’s Blueprint Fund and Problem Gambling Fund.
State Police Helicopters Busy
Maryland State Police Aviation Command had a busy weekend in Western Maryland. Trooper 5 from Cumberland responded to rescue a swimmer with a diving head injury from a river in Belington, West Virginia. Trooper 3, based in Frederick, located and rescued an injured hiker who had fallen on the Appalachian Trail in Garrett County. First responders requested aerial rescue due to the severity of the hiker’s injuries. Trooper 5 also rescued an ATV operator who suffered a neck injury on Georges Creek Valley in Lonaconing. The ATV operator was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, for treatment…
Motor Vehicle Theft Reported
On August 13, 2024, The Cumberland Police Department responded to the 300 block of Columbia Street in reference to a stolen motor vehicle complaint. Officer’s made contact with the victim, who advised her vehicle was stolen. The victim described the vehicle as being a red 2022 Nissan Sentra with West Virginia registration (49F867). The vehicle was last seen in the area of the 200 block of Frederick Street. The Cumberland Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in locating the stolen vehicle. Wellersburg Mountain Road Shut Down Due to Crash
Wellersburg Mountain Road off Route 36 is shut down at this time due to a tractor trailer crash early this morning. Crews responded at 4:30am for a rollover involving a tractor trailer. One injury has been reported. Penn Dot and Pennsylvania State Police are in charge of the scene and officials say the road may be shut down for most of the day.
America’s 911 Ride Coming Friday
America’s 911 Ride, sponsored by America’s 911 Foundation, is expected to come through Cumberland on Friday, August 16th. Between 8:30 am and 9:15 am, 270 motorcyclists will come make their 24th memorial trek through the Narrows and into Cumberland before heading to Rocky Gap via Frederick Street. America’s 911 Foundation honors those lost in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Morriss Says State Will Study I-68 Through Cumberland
Yet another truck rollover this week on Interstate 68 approaching the city has made the call for more safety and speed enforcement more pronounced.
