City of Frostburg urge residents to conserve water

Despite the significant rainfall received in the past 24 hours, the City of Frostburg continues to urge residents to conserve water.  Piney Reservoir remains at below normal levels. Easy ways to conserve water include foregoing watering lawns and washing cars, taking shorter showers, and running the washer and dishwasher only when full. Continued voluntary conservation efforts can help reduce the strain on the limited water resources available to the City. Governor Jim Justice launches Emergency Drought Relief Reimbursement Grant Program

Gov. Jim Justice announced today the Emergency Drought Relief Reimbursement Grant Program, providing financial assistance to agencies helping secure and distribute irrigation and livestock water supplies in counties experiencing severe or extreme drought conditions in accordance with the U.S. Drought Monitor. The program reimburses eligible expenses incurred by local public agencies, fire departments, and conservation districts, for water transportation to farms in affected areas. State Prison Inmate Death Under Investigation In Allegany County

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at a state prison in Allegany County. The inmate is identified as Marvin Brown, 23. Brown was declared deceased by emergency medical service personnel on the scene. He was serving time at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland. Brown was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for autopsy. At about 9:30 a.m., Aug. 9, 2024, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit about an inmate death. County Makes Staff Layoffs Due To Budget Challenge

The Allegany County Commissioners announced Friday that  six Emergency Medical Services crewmembers would be laid off in their ongoing attempts to close a two million dollar budget shortfall.  Other changes announced include shift changes at two stations and updates to staffing procedures.  County Administrator Jason Bennett told WCBC News the layoffs were a last resort and hopes further staff cuts will not be necessary… The union for EMS employees issued a statement Friday saying they strongly oppose the decision and are calling on the county commissioners to revisit the measures being taken and find a solution that protects both EMS…

Ridgeley Celebrates Heritage Day

Beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, the town of Ridgeley is holding its third annual Heritage Day in memory of Donnie Rinehart.  The event is being held at the Ridgeley Football Field and Community Center.  Activities include a car show, crafts and vendors, bounce houses and plenty of food and ice cream.  The event runs all day.

Governor, First Lady Issue Statement on Coal Miner’s Death

Gov. Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice issued the following statement today after learning about the death of a coal miner in Taylor County.  Joe Crandall, 57, of Fairmont passed away yesterday from injuries sustained at the Arch Coal, Leer Mining Complex near Grafton. This marks the third mining fatality in West Virginia this year. He is survived by his loving wife Davina, along with many great friends and relatives. “Any time we lose a miner, it’s a tragedy beyond belief,” Gov. County Commissioners Announce EMS Layoffs

Friday morning, the Allegany County Commissioners announced budget adjustments in response to the ongoing fiscal challenges impacting the county’s Emergency Medical Services.  Adjustments include the layoff of six probationary crew, shift changes at two stations, and updated staff overtime procedures. Those laid off will receive separation  packages.  The county points to unsustainable increases in expenditures for the decision to make the staff reductions.
