Scam Calls Targeting Sex Offender List, Jury Duty – Update
Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson is alerting the community to two phone scams currently making the rounds. The most recent involves a spoofed number that shows up on caller ID as the county Sheriff’s office targeting names on the sex offender registry… Sheriff Robertson said a similar scam is also being reported having to do with missed jury duty and outstanding fines. Robertson says law enforcement never asks for any financial information… If someone has given out financial information, the Sheriff says they should immediately contact their bank or credit union…
CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED
On Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at approximately 5:00 PM, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 400 block of Baltimore Avenue for a trespassing complaint. Officers located Scott Levine and Brittany Loscig at the residence. It was determined that no one was to be at the property. Levine and Loscig were issued criminal citations and later released pending trial. Sheriff’s Office Alerts Residents to Scams
The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of scam phone calls targeting registered sex offenders in the county. The callers are telling registered offenders that they must submit a DNA sample or risk facing additional criminal penalties. These calls are not coming from the Sheriff’s Office or from our sex offender registry coordinator. If any current offenders receive these calls, please contact the Allegany County Sheriff's Office sex offender registry coordinator. I-68 Detour Near Hancock Planned
Due to patching and paving work, eastbound I-68 starting at the Creek Road Bridge near Hancock will be closed starting at 7pm on June 27. An overnight detour will start at Exit 77 and direct traffic through Hancock back to Interstate 70 East. If weather postpones the work, it will take place July 1.
Health Coverage Assistance Launched
Governor Wes Moore has announced the Maryland Insurance Administration’s new resource to help Marylanders navigate health care coverage challenges. The new Health Coverage Assistance Team, known as H-CAT, will provide information, assistance, and advocacy for state residents. H-CAT is designed to help consumers understand their coverage plans, what is covered, and how to use the benefits and health plan process including authorizations, appeals, and complaints. The resource can be accessed through maryland@insurance.gov.
Oldtown Road DUI arrest
On Tuesday, June 25th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police responded to the 1500 block of E. Oldtown Rd for a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival on scene, officers discovered that a GMC Acadia, operated by Emily Michelle Wagner, 33, had struck two parked cars. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Wagner’s vehicle was not registered and officers suspected her of driving while under the influence of alcohol. As a result of the investigation, Wagner was placed under arrest and transported to Police Headquarters for processing. At a recent Cumberland Mayor and City Council meeting, a special presentation was made by the city to the Allegany High School Girls Softball team under manager Brandon Monahan. Little Round Top Reopens At Gettysburg
After being closed for almost two years for extensive restoration, the Civil War battle site known as Little Round Top has reopened in Gettysburg. The site where extensive fighting was seen in July of 1863 has been rehabbed to improve parking areas, accessibility and safety, and address erosion and vegetation issues.
