Officials hold Truck Safety Meeting

On November 14, Chief Chuck Ternent hosted a truck safety meeting at the Cumberland Police Department. Attendees included Mayor Raymond Morris, Senator Michael McKay, Delegate Jason Buckle, and representatives from the State Highway Administration, Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Allegany County Sheriff’s Department, and Allegany County Department of Emergency Services. The meeting focused on addressing concerns regarding interstate commercial vehicle traffic through the City of Cumberland. West Virginia Expands Remote Victim Outreach Program

Eleven West Virginia counties now have a way for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to access courts virtually without encountering their assailant. GAP Trail Bikers and Hikers Benefit Downtown

Larry Brock of Mountain Maryland Trails spoke with WCBC as he attended the Baltimore Street reopening. Brock talked about the bicyclists that travel through the area on the Great Allegheny Passage. He said in 2022, about 120,000 people used the trail and about a third of them spend money and will be happy to do so in the Baltimore Street corridor…     “It’s neat to talk to them because they all love it. It’s neat, it’s quaint. The people are friendly. Things aren’t terribly expensive. It’s fun to see the joy and happiness of our fun town.”

Local Lottery Winnings Not Yet Claimed

November 19th’s Powerball drawing has been lucky for someone in the Allegany County area.  A winning ticket worth $50,000 was sold at Lashbaugh’s Bar and Grill on Warrior Drive in Cresaptown.  However, the winner has not yet claimed the prize.  Aberdeen has a new millionaire thanks to a Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket, while a Keno ticket worth more than $150,000 sold last week in Hyattsville. Three scratch-off tickets yielded $100,000 prizes for other players in Maryland.  Across the state, the Lottery paid more than $29.4 million in prizes during the week of Nov. 18-24.  

Nearly 80 Million Traveling for Thanksgiving

AAA Travel projects that almost 80 million people will travel this Thanksgiving holiday, an increase of over a million compared to last year. Most of those travelers will go by car, also an increase of a million over 2023. Air travelers will number about 6 million. AAA spokesman Dan Goodman says all forms of travel are headed for breaking records this holiday season… “The forecast is going to see increases in all sectors, including automobile traffic, planes, cruises, trains, and buses. All a huge increase.”

Martin O’Malley Seeks Chairmanship of Democratic National Committee

Former Governor Martin O'Malley has received endorsements from three key Maryland Democrats.  Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin were joined by incoming Senator Angela Alsobrooks in supporting O'Malley's candidacy.  The Democratic Party will announce a new chair on February 1.

Jim Justice Vague on Transition to Senate

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice has been elected to the U.S. Senate but says he is unsure if he will be sworn in with the other senators on January 3.  Justice’s term as governor does not end until January 13.  The two term Republican said he is still trying to figure out how to handle the conflicting schedules.  Justice added that he still plans to coach girls basketball at Greenbrier East High School despite his duties in Washington.
