On Thursday, April 11th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Daniel Cardenas II, 27, of Cumberland MD. Cardenas was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on April 9th. The warrant alleges Cardenas failed to comply with an order of the court that were placed upon him due to previous charges that include assault, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Criminal Summons Arrest
On Thursday, April 11th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police served a Criminal Summons on Samantha Lee Riley, 38, of Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on April 11th at a residence in the 100 block of Polk St. During the incident, it is alleged that Riley interfered with officers as a lawful arrest was being made on another subject. As a result of the incident, an application for charges was submitted and a summons issued. On this date, the summons was served and Riley was released, pending trial in District Court. Polk St Arrest
On Thursday, April 11th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Richard David Potcner, 44, of Cumberland MD. Initially, officers had responded to the 100 block of Polk St in reference to a harassment complaint. During the investigation, Potcner was developed as a suspect. It was known to officers on scene that Potcner had an active warrant for his arrest. Officers on scene then observed Potcner on the front porch of a nearby residence and attempted to contact him. Equipment malfunction identified as cause of 911 outage
Tense moments Thursday afternoon at the Allegany County Emergency Operations center. Just after 2PM a piece of Motorola equipment malfunctioned preventing 911 calls to be answered by dispatchers. Firefighters in their stations and other emergency staff stood watch on their phone line at their facilities while city and county officials work to reroute phone lines to the Garrett County 911 center. No emergency calls were lost during the system outage and emergency response personnel were dispatched to area emergencies during the two-hour outage. Bereavement Leave for Mothers Addressed
One of the more sensitive bills on Governor Moore’s desk to sign this week was House Bill 52. It extends the number of days of bereavement leave for mothers who have lost a child at childbirth or up to 6 months of age. ACOM Registration To Open
Allegany College of Maryland will have registration open soon for summer and fall classes. Schedules are available to preview on the college website. New students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor prior to registration for help with the admissions process. The summer semester begins May 20 and fall courses will begin on August 19.
Education Available for Adults Concerned with Finances
A recent survey by Edward Jones Financial discovered that 4 out of 5 adults claim they did not learn properly about personal finance in school. As a result, these adults lack confidence in financial literacy as adults. WV Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment Projects Receive Grants
More than $2 million in grants have been awarded across West Virginia for mental health and substance abuse treatment projects. Behavioral health programs in 25 counties in the state received funding including $198,000 to Mineral County for Burlington United Methodist Family Services and $132,000 to Berkeley County. Caucus Addressed Juvenile Justice Reform
One of the main issues that the Maryland Republican Caucus wanted to address in Annapolis this year was Juvenile Justice Reform. While many bills were submitted to try to tighten up the juvenile justice system, not everything went through this year.
