Men’s Track & Field Places Second at Messiah Invitational
Frostburg State Men's Track & Field team competed in the Messiah Multis & Invite over the span of three days, taking second overall in the meet, just one point shy of tying for first. Frostburg dominated in multiple events, as freshman Ka'Von Turner knotted first in the 100 meters with a 10.66 time, while also taking first in the 200 meters with a 21.91 time. Frankfort Elementary School Set to Open This Fall
Progress continues at the new Frankfort Elementary School in Short Gap. Located near both the middle and high schools, the pre-K to 4th grade facility will include an 8,000 square foot gymnasium and an art classroom with a kiln area. The school mascot will be a rocket as voted upon by students and staff to reflect the nearby Rocket Center.
Federal Court in Martinsburg Dismisses Ridgeley Case
A federal district court in Martinsburg has dismissed a wrongful termination suit filed by a former Ridgeley police chief. Erik Wyer was fired by the town in May, 2022.
New Business Coming to Cumberland
A new business is opening in downtown Cumberland. Madison Paige Boutique is moving to Cumberland from Frostburg and will open this summer at the Rosenbaum building.

Applications for Appalachian Leadership Institute
Applications for the sixth class of the Appalachian Leadership Institute, a nine-month leadership development training through the Appalachian Regional Commission, are now available. The focus is on economic development in Appalachia. The curriculum comprises six multi-day seminars across the Appalachian region, each focusing on one of ARC’s investment priorities. Black Bears Emerging
In many places, black bears have already emerged from accessible food sources. Bears are most common in Maryland’s four westernmost counties – Allegany, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington, known as Maryland’s bear country. This season, the Maryland Department of Resources checked six dens, finding six sows and 18 cubs. The team handled a 305-pound, 26-year-old sow who State Bear Biologist Jonathan Trudeau said is the oldest bear on record in Maryland, indicating a healthy bear population with ample food supply.
Fugitive from Justice Arrest
On Thursday, April 11th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Kenneth Ervin Merica, 24, of Cumberland MD. Merica was arrested as a fugitive from justice when it was learned that he had an active arrest warrant issued for him Sumner County, Tennessee. The Tennessee warrant charges Merica with soliciting sexual exploitation of a minor and 12 counts of exploitation of a minor by electronic means. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center.
