Book and Resource Giveaway Planned at FSU

Frostburg State University’s ASTAR AmeriCorps program will hold a Book and Resource Giveaway beginning Saturday, April 6 through April 10 at City Place in Frostburg. The event features free food, books and other items. ASTAR provides direct service programs with nonprofits and agencies to improve child literacy, health care and living conditions of children and elderly, and help at-risk youth through after-school programs.

Warrant Arrest

Tuesday, March 26, 2024 Karen Frances Moreland, 49 of Cumberland, was served a District Court Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear. Her original charges is for Theft: $100 To Under $1,500. She was released on a $2,500 Unsecured Personal Bond.

Child Hit By Vehicle

Allegany County EMS responded to a house on Boyd Hill Lane for reports of a child hit by a vehicle. Resident was backing out of their driveway when the child was hit.  Trooper 5 was alerted but EMS is transporting the child to the hospital.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT ARREST

On March 26th, 2024, at approximately 4:27 a.m. the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 block of Bedford Street for a disturbance. Upon arrival officers contacted the complainant. The complainant advised that they obtained an interim protective order against Robert Glenn Handley. Officers served the protective order on Handley, and Handley became argumentative. He then yelled at the complainant. Officers ordered him to discontinue communication with the complainant, and Handley continued to yell at the complainant. THEFT ARREST

On March 26th, 2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m. the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 200 block of Greene Street for a theft. Upon arrival officers made contact with an employee from the store who advised that they observed Andrew Jeremiah Seifert place items into his coat pocket and attempt to leave the store. Seifert was placed under arrest for the theft and issued a criminal citation. BENCH WARRANTS SERVED

On March 26th, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Erik Damon Baker. The warrant was issued as a result of Baker failing to appear for court on March 22nd, 2024. Baker was originally charged with theft on February 14, 2024 from a Park Street business. Baker was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center where he was seen by a District Court commissioner and held on $1,000.00 bond. President Biden Offers Support

President Joe Biden spoke Tuesday on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, offering the full support of the federal government.  The Army Corps of Engineers will be clearing the channel to enable ships to leave and enter the Port of Baltimore.  Biden said the bridge serves over 30,000 vehicles daily and will be rebuilt as soon as possible… The President also commented on the importance of the Port of Baltimore for the auto industry and area residents

Garrett Medical Center Ranked in Top 100

Garrett Regional Medical Center has been recognized as a 2024 Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital by The Chartis Center for Rural Health for the sixth consecutive year in a row. The annual Top 100 awards recognize outstanding performance among the nation’s rural hospitals based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance Index.  Garrett Regional was one of only two hospitals in Maryland to be included in the list this year.

Blood Donations for Animals Discussed

A rather disturbing issue around blood donations for animals was discussed recently on the WCBC Dave Norman program. Dan Paden of PETA – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, spoke about investigations into captive animal blood banks, often made up of hundreds of animals taken from shelters under the pretense of being adopted.  Paden talked about a recent investigation in Indiana that uncovered serious mistreatment of animals… Paden suggests a more humane alternative, community-based bloodbanks that pet owners can participate in…

WV Goldrush Fishing Begins April 1

West Virginia’s annual Goldrush fishing event will begin April 1. Golden trout are being stocked throughout the state for the seventh annual event.
