Greene Street DUI Arrest

On Friday, January 19th, 2024, at approximately 3:00 am, The Cumberland City Police responded to the 200 block of Greene St for the report of a hit and run motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival on scene, officers observed a heavily damaged Lexus passenger vehicle that had crashed into a snow bank. Officers then made contact with the operator of the vehicle, Aaron Joseph Borho, 27, of Fort Ashby WV. Warrants Served

On Thursday, January 18th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Teresa Marie Walters, 56, of Cumberland MD. Walters was arrested on an active Arrest Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court for an incident that was first reported in July, 2023. During that incident, officers were contacted by an elderly victim who advised them of fraudulent activity regarding their finances. The investigation revealed Walters had been acting a caregiver for the victim for several months prior to the reported incident. It was discovered that over the course of several months, Walters had gained access to the victim’s personal documents…

Commissioner Atkinson says Riverside Park Project top priority

Michele Martz, President of UPMC Western Maryland at PACE

Over 300 people attended Thursday night’s annual PACE reception in Annapolis and many are expected to stay for Friday morning’s legislative breakfast.  Michele Martz has been the president of UPMC Western Maryland since 2020 and she said the health system has much to offer the area in terms of employment.     Mountain Maryland’s annual lobbying effort, the PACE reception, took place Thursday night in Annapolis.  Michele Martz is the president of UPMC Western Maryland and she is also a member of the Greater Cumberland Committee.  Martz told WCBC News that opportunities abound in the area.

Gov. Justice declares State of Emergency for all 55 counties ahead of winter storm

Gov. Jim Justice has declared a State of Emergency for all 55 West Virginia counties due to the winter storm event forecast to hit the state in the coming days.   The National Weather Service predicts heavy snow, dangerous wind chills, and strong winds beginning today, Thursday, January 18, 2024, and continuing throughout the week and into the coming weekend. “All West Virginians need to absolutely be ready for the potential impact this winter storm may bring to our state,” Gov. West Virginia Fire Leads To Woman’s Arrest in Maryland

A Terra Alta woman was arrested after she told West Virginia fire investigators who had charged her with arson that she set a fire in nearby Oakland last summer.  Deputy State Fire Marshals were contacted by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office after they arrested Rachel Lin Giffen, 23, for intentionally setting a fire at her employer's store in Terra Alta. Trash collection suspended for Friday

Due to expected extreme weather conditions, City of Cumberland trash collection has been suspended for the Friday, South end and Maple side Area of the City of Cumberland. Residents in these areas will receive double trash pickup on their next regularly scheduled collection day: Tuesday January 23rd..  Any questions may be directed to the Public Works Department at 301-759-6620 or publicworks@cumberlandmd.gov or Burgmeier's Hauling at 301-777-0416, Customerservice@burgmeiers.com. Bulk items that were scheduled for collection will be collected next Friday January 26th.

School Closings for Friday

All Allegany County Public Schools will be CLOSED, Friday, January 19, 2024.  Synchronous learning will take place for students via the Schoology platform with login hours at 8:30 am for elementary and 8:00 am for middle and high.  As always, students without access to connectivity will be given up to two days to submit assignments.  All synchronous virtual learning schedules can be found on the ACPS website.   Additionally, all staff may work remotely, Friday, January 19, 2024, with the exception of essential personnel.  Bishop Walsh, Calvary Christian Academy, Lighthouse Christian Acadmy and Mineral County Schools are closed on Friday.
