Governor’s Buy Local Cookout Competition Deadline May 29th
May 29th is the deadline to enter recipes for the Governor’s Buy Local Cookout, scheduled for July 18. Maryland chefs and restaurants may submit original recipes using local ingredients. The recipe must include 50% Maryland-sourced products. High school and college teams are also encouraged to submit recipes. More details are available on the Maryland Department of Agriculture Facebook page. Selected teams go to Annapolis to prepare and share their dish at the Governor’s cookout.
Memorial Day Events today
Traditional observances for Memorial Day include the City of Lonaconing at 10AM Monday, services at the Gulf War Memorial at 11AM, Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery at 2PM, and Let's Beautify Cumberland will conduct a service at Veterans Park on Centre Street at 3PM in Downtown Cumberland. The Potomac Concert Band kicks off the Sunday in the Park at 730pm on the at the Constitution Park Amphitheatre.
DISORDERLY CONDUCT ARREST
On Sunday, May 26, 2024 at approximately 8:40 AM, an officer with the Cumberland Police Department located a male subject creating a disturbance in the first block of Frederick Street. The subject was identified as Tyler Dixon. Dixon was yelling obscenities at passing cars. The officer stopped to contact Dixon. He then yelled at the officer. The officer observed that there were bystanders in the area observing the disturbance. Dixon was warned multiple times to stop creating a disturbance. Dixon refused to listen to the officer’s orders. CRIMINAL SUMMONSES SERVED
On Sunday, May 26, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served criminal summonses on Onyka Crabtree and Madison MacDonald. The summonses were issued as the result of an incident that occurred on May 13, 2024. On this date at approximately 9:38 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the first block of Pennsylvania Avenue for a disturbance. When officers arrived, they observed a large amount of the neighborhood residents observing the disturbance being created. Attorney General Morrisey Responds to Duke Letter Regarding His Opposition to Biden’s Red Flag Law Hub
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey on Thursday responded to a letter sent by the Duke Center for Firearms Law (Duke University School of Law) regarding Morrisey’s opposition to the establishment of the National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center—a hub formed by Biden’s Department of Justice to provide “assistance” to entities who implement laws confiscating firearms from those who purportedly pose a threat to themselves or others. Closures to note for Memorial Day
Some important closures to note for Memorial Day. Cumberland’s City Hall will be closed with no employees available. Trash pickup will not occur on Monday in the city – those who have trash pickups on Monday will resume on Thursday. All county and state government offices, including schools will be closed for the holiday as well. Emergency services will operate normally.
Probation Violation Leads to Arrest
On Saturday, May 25, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a Circuit Court bench warrant on Branden Clark. The warrant was issued as the result of Clark violating probation. He was originally charged with CDS: Possession with the Intent to Distribute Narcotics. Clark was arrested and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center where he is currently being held without bond pending his appearance before the court. Criminal Summons Served
On Saturday, May 25, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Steven Miller. The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing for charges against Miller at the District Court of Allegany County. Baltimore St. Grand Reopening set for November
The City of Cumberland, Cumberland Downtown Development Commission, and Cumberland Economic Development Corporation have announced the Grand Reopening Celebration for the Baltimore St. Revitalization Project will be on Thursday, November 14th at 11am, followed by a weekend of celebratory activities throughout the downtown area.
