Oldtown Road Assault Arrest

On December 23rd, Officers from the Cumberland Police Department (CPD) were dispatched to a residence on Oldtown Road for a subject barricading himself in the residence. Officers were also to assist Allegany Country Sheriff Department with serving Arthur Tejeno Bunbasi Jr. a Protective Order issued by District Court. Arthur did try to elude law enforcement by jumping out the second-floor rear window. He was located in the woods behind apartment and officially served his paperwork. Citizens Need To Check Lines

Help from residents living in the city limits of Cumberland is needed to complete an inventory of all private water service lines connected to the public water system. The US Environmental Protection Agency is requiring action that all water utilities must determine where lead pipes exist in their systems by the end of 2024. Bobby Smith, Director of Engineering and Utilities for Cumberland, is encouraging residents to fill in the survey on the city website… So far, Smith says the survey has not been utilized as much as hoped for but the project is moving ahead…

Fire Companies Receive Assistance Grants

Eleven volunteer fire companies in Allegany County were recently awarded Volunteer Fire Assistance grants from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The grants come through the Maryland Forest Service and are to be used for wildland firefighting projects and equipment including hoses, power tools, engines and pumping units and all-terrain vehicles. Funding was provided to 52 volunteer firefighting units across the state.  

Gas Leak Closes Part of Baltimore Avenue

Baltimore Avenue is closed Sunday night from Decatur Street to Goethe Street.  A vehicle crashed into a residence causing a gas leak.  Drivers and residents are urged to avoid the area.  The roadway closure is expected to last several hours.

Investigation Continues Into Christmas Eve Fatal Fire

A team of investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, and Allegany Combined County Criminal (C3I), is conducting an investigation involving a fatal dwelling fire at 16 Lee Street in Frostburg  that claimed of one person. The first 911 call was received just before 7:00 a.m. when the victim reported a fire in the front area of the home. Frostburg Fire Department and nearby fire companies responded to the two-alarm fire. It took seventy-five firefighters approximately one hour to control the fire. Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters located a deceased occupant within the single-family dwelling. The victim has preliminarily been identified…

Attorney General Morrisey Announces $700 Million Settlement with Google Over Play Store Misconduct

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and a bipartisan group of 52 attorneys general on Tuesday announced a $700 million agreement with Google in their lawsuit about Google’s anticompetitive conduct with the Google Play Store. “We believe in a free market—vigorous competition protects consumers and helps the economy thrive,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “The action our coalition alleged in the lawsuit— anticompetitive and unfair business practices—harmed consumers by causing them to pay higher prices for purchases made while using an app.” Google will pay $630 million in restitution, minus costs and fees, to consumers who made purchases on the Google Play…

MD Natural Resources Considering Savage River Lodge

Maryland Department of Natural Resources is considering the Savage River Lodge in Garrett County. A November 20th letter from the DNR to Garrett County Board of Commissioners Chair Paul Edwards, State Sen. Mike McKay and Del. Jim Hinebaugh states it is “notification of a potential real estate acquisition in Garrett County” and lists 41.96 acres on Mount Aetna Road. Property is being considered by DNR is a potential addition to Savage River State Forest.

One Dead in Frostburg house fire

Allegany Emergency Services along with Frostburg Fire Department working a 2 Alarm house fire just after 7AM at 16 Lee Street claimed the life of one person. Fire crews responding to the scene hampered by water pressure problems from hydrants and have set up water pump lines downhill from the depot to the fire scene on Lee Street. Defensive fire operations continue with no fire crews inside do to building collapse. Fire Marshal has been dispatched to the scene. Utility crews from Potomac Edison and Columbia Gas also responding.
