Arrest Warrant Served

On October 26, 2023 Officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Kordell Trebor Stewart. The Arrest Warrant was issued by the District Court stemming from an incident that occurred on October 22, 2023. During the investigation officers responded to a local establishment for a report of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival Officers spoke with the victim who advised that Kordell Stewart broke her cell phone and slashed her vehicles tires. Valley, Market Street Bridges Will Be Inspected Today

Valley Street Bridge will be closed to one lane with flagging operations directing traffic on Friday, October 27th, from 8am to 12pm in order to perform a bridge inspection. Once completed, operations will shift to the Market Street Bridge from 1PM to 4PM. Flagging operations will be in effect to direct traffic across the bridges.

I-68 Ramp Work Scheduled Today

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will be performing a stormwater inlet repair on westbound I-68 (National Freeway) ramp to MD 958 (Vocke Road)/exit 40 on Friday, October 27. The project is expected to take one day and will improve safety for drivers in advance of winter operations.  Drivers will detour to US 40 Alternate (National Pike)/exit 39 during the inlet repair work. Crews will work between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on October 27.   The State Highway Administration’s contractor, Reliable Contracting, of Gambrills, will use directional signs, construction cones and barrels to guide drivers through the work…

Suspect In Killing of Judge Found Dead

Washington County law enforcement announced that Pedro Argote, the man wanted for the murder of Maryland Circuit Court Judge Andrew Wilkinson has been found dead.  Argote’s body was discovered just before Noon on Thursday in a heavily wooded area between Clear Spring and Bottom Roads in Williamsport.  Argote’s car had been found in the area earlier in the week. 2024 Year of Civil Rights

Governor Wes Moore has proclaimed 2024 as Maryland’s Year of Civil Rights. During a launch event at the Banneker-Douglas Museum, Moore invited attendees to get out into the community in the coming year to practice, protect, and participate in programs being offered with state and national organizations including the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Park Service, Maryland Heritage areas, and museums…    

Delaney Declares Candidacy for 6th District Seat

April McClain Delaney, an attorney who just recently worked in the Biden Administration US Commerce Department, is running for the Maryland 6th Congressional District seat once occupied by her husband, John Delaney.  Delaney joins a growing field of candidates for the seat being vacated by David Trone who is now seeking the US Senate seat of retiring Senator Ben Cardin. There is now a mix of about 18 Democrats and Republicans seeking the position.

City Asking State For Assistance on Bridge Issue

Cumberland’s attempts to get CSX Transportation to work with the city on the damaged Washington Street Bridge have had little effect on getting the bridge repaired. Now, Mayor Ray Morriss says it’s pulling in the state for assistance with the issue… Morriss says that going to the Surface Transportation Board for a decision will be the only way to get anything done now for that bridge…

Energy Assistance Funding Announced

Maryland’s Senators announced more than $74 million in energy assistance for low-income families this week.  The federal dollars were made possible in part through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and comes by way of the Department of Health and Human Services.  This year’s funding adds almost $2 million more to Maryland’s Low Income Energy Assistance Program. The money will help reduce costs associated with home energy bills, weatherization, and energy-related repairs for low-income families to cool and heat their homes. That Is A BIG Bear!

A Garrett County resident, identified only as Melissa, now has the record for the largest black bear killed in the state.  The hunter killed a black bear on the first day of the season that weighed in at 643 pounds in her home county.  The Department of Natural Resources sponsors an annual bear hunt that started on October 23 in Maryland’s three western-most counties. Last year saw hunters take 103 black bears with an average weight of 177 pounds, the heaviest weighing in at 427 pounds.
