Criminal Summons Served
On Sunday October 8th, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served a Criminal Summons on Megan Spencer. The Criminal Summons was issued by the District Court in reference to a motor vehicle theft that occurred on October 6th, 2023. During the incident officers responded to the 300 block of Industrial Boulevard for the report. Upon officer’s arrival they spoke with the victim who advised that Megan had taken the vehicle without their permission. At the time of the incident Megan was not able to be located and an application for charges was filed, and this Criminal Summons was issued….
September Casino Revenue Down YOY
Maryland’s six casinos combined to generate over $155million in revenue from slots and table games in the month of September. That’s down 2.6% compared to last year’s revenue for the same month. Casino gaming revenue contributes to the Education Trust Fund but offerings to it were also off three percent compared to September of 2022. Locally, Rocky Gap Casino brought in $4.8million for its 623 slot machines and 16 table games. Rocky Gap’s revenue is down 6.5% compared to last September.
Tick Virus Claims Maryland Life
Maryland’s Department of Health has announced the first travel-related Powassan virus death in the state. The Powassan virus is spread by the bite on an infected tick was confirmed in late September. The virus is rare and is the first case recorded in Maryland. Most cases in the US occur in the northeast and Great Lakes regions. The state’s campaign to promote being proactive against tick bites will launch next week but Marylanders are reminded to conduct a full body check for ticks after being outside in areas where ticks are prevalent.
Paving Plans In Place
Mayor Ray Morriss was on WCBC recently and answered a caller’s concern about the condition of the city’s streets, particularly in the Greene and Baltimore Street areas. Morriss says there’s a plan in place to get the roads paved once gas line and bridge construction in the area is completed…
Crash Deaths Increasing
Maryland transportation officials are urging all travelers in the state to rededicate themselves to safety on roadways. Preliminary data for 2023 shows a disturbing trend for the year. According to reports, 52 people died in crashes just in September alone – the year to date data shows 456 fatalities. Chrissy Nizer, State Motor Vehicle Administrator, says the numbers are trending in the wrong direction and are unacceptable…
Sheriff’s Department Gets Okay for Bearcat Armored Vehicle
The Allegany County Commissioners gave approval at their latest meeting to start the process for the Sheriff’s department to purchase a Lenco Bearcat armored vehicle. Officers have had to borrow other department’s vehicles when emergency situations arise. Commissioner Bill Atkinson says the Bearcat is needed to protect both citizens and officers… Ordering the vehicle now puts the county in line to receive it in about a year, allowing more time to search for funding in addition to what’s already in place…
Downtown Lit for Shoppers
Evening shoppers to Cumberland’s downtown retailers will now have an easier time of making their way to their favorite stores. Within the construction area, most existing street lighting has been removed but Downtown Development Director Melinda Kelleher tells WCBC that new temporary fixtures are in place to light the main shopping corridors, creating a better shopping environment…

52 Annual CROP Walk steps off today
The fifty-second annual CROP Walk is scheduled for October 8th. Started in 1972, CROP or Christians Relating to Other People has enabled food pantries in the area to meet the needs of individuals and families.
