Gov. Justice provides update on train derailment in Summers County

Gov. Justice announced that a rockslide near the city of Sandstone caused a train derailment earlier this week in Summers County. All 109 train cars were empty. The derailment injured three crew members, caused parts of the train to catch fire, and sent one locomotive and one fuel tank into the New River. The site of the accident is located just south of Sandstone inside the New River National Park and Preserve. CSX owns twelve feet from the middle of the track to either side and will be responsible for cleanup. The company is sending a spill response unit that will coordinate with…

MDOT IMPROVE DECK, DRAINAGE SYSTEM ON US 40 BRIDGE OVER WESTBOUND I-70 IN WASHINGTON COUNTY

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will conduct a project to improve drainage and the driving surface of the US 40 (National Pike) bridge over westbound I-70 (Exit 9) in Indian Springs this week, Monday through Friday, March 13-17, weather permitting. To safely perform the work and expedite the repairs, the bridge will be closed daily during non-peak hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No lane closures will occur on I-70. Public Assistance Requested locating Ray Lawrence Aleshire

The Cumberland Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in locating Ray Lawrence Aleshire. Aleshire is currently reported as being missing and was last seen March 5th, 2023 in the Cumberland Area. Aleshire is a 53-year-old white male who is approximately 5’7 and 150 pounds. Anyone with information as to his whereabouts please call 3011-777-1600. Callers can remain anonymous.  

DUI Arrest

On Saturday March 11th, 2023 at approximately 3:00 am an officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that had stopped on I-68 East Bound. Upon contacting the operator, Janelle Fox, the officer observed evidence of impairment. The officer continued their investigation and subsequently placed Fox under arrest. Fox was later released on citations and awaits her trial at District Court. Arrest: Janelle Whitney Fox, age 37, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: DUI Related Citations.

Arrest Warrant Served

Fraud to Avoid Prosecution Arrest On Friday March 10th, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served three Arrest Warrants on Shaina Mae Holler. The Arrest Warrants were issued by the District and Circuit Court for failing to appear, and violation of pre trial release conditions. When the officers attempted to serve the Arrest Warrants on Holler, she attempted to assume the identity of another individual. The officers were able to gather information that positively identified Holler, and placed her under arrest. Holler was taken before a District Court Commissioner where she was held without bond. Daylight saving time officially begins at 2 a.m. Sunday for most of the U.S., meaning the majority of Americans will "spring forward" by setting their clocks ahead one hour before turning in Saturday night.

Hooley Pub Crawl 2023

A full slate of entertainers will perform throughout the day at Downtown Cumberland and South Cumberland locations. Maryland DOE releases annual statewide report card, more than half of schools retain gold stars

For the first time since the pandemic, Maryland’s State Department of Education has issued its annual report card, complete with star ratings for each school. The report card system includes student achievement growth on state tests in English language, arts, math, postsecondary readiness, proficiency for English language learners, graduation rate and a well-rounded curriculum. The data for the 2021-2022 school year shows that 63% of the state’s public schools held onto their 2019 ratings, one quarter lost a star, and 139 schools gained a star. By a different measure, the MSDE reported that 75% of schools earned three or more stars.

MEDICAID Renewal changes beginning in April

During the COVID-19 public health emergency, Marylanders who were enrolled in Medicaid continued to be covered, even if they were no longer eligible. However, Medicaid renewals will not be automatic this year. Starting in April 2023, Maryland will resume reviewing Medicaid accounts and checking eligibility. Not everyone will be up for renewal at the same time. These renewals will take place over 12 months. It is very important that Medicaid participants make sure their contact information is up to date.
