Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson says a scammer has stooped to using the Sheriff's Office to try and con people out of money. He released the following statement…
On todays date, a gentleman at a business in LaVale received a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Allegany County Sheriff's Office. The caller advised the gentleman, that he had missed jury duty and was required to pay a $2500.00 fine. The gentleman refused the request. The gentleman then called the number back that was on the caller ID. The call was directed to an answering machine that also identified itself as being with the Allegany County Sheriff's Office.
Please be aware that the Sheriff’s Office would never make such a request. No personal information of any type should ever be provided over the telephone. Be safe and cautious. I am currently investigation this incident.
