County names new tourism director

June 29th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

A marketing professional with over a decade of diverse tourism experience will be Allegany County’s new Director of Tourism. Ashli Workman will join Allegany County Government at the end of July.  Workman has been Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Nemacolin Woodlands Resort where she is an Executive Team member and leads a staff of six.

Workman’s introduction into the field of tourism started in 2007 with Wisp Resort in Garrett County, Maryland. She had a Marketing/Public Relations Internship and was subsequently hired as the Marketing Coordinator. Workman left Wisp Resort in 2008 to pursue an opportunity at Nemacolin. Workman began as the Assistant Marketing Manager at Nemacolin, was promoted to Interactive Marketing Manager in 2009, and assumed her current position in 2013.

Workman also possesses regional tourism project experience for a rural region. She is associated with the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau, a three-county destination marketing organization in southwestern Pennsylvania. Workman also played an integral part from inception to launch the Fayette County (Pennsylvania) Visitors Information Center earlier this year.

Workman was a key driver in the successful effort to secure ABC’s The Bachelorette to Nemacolin in 2016. This international public relations opportunity showcased the resort, developed and enhanced brand awareness for Nemacolin, and generated short and long-term financial gains for the enterprise.

As the Director of Tourism, Workman will report to the Director of Economic and Community Development Jeffrey S. Barclay. “Ashli has proven experience in the field of tourism and is fully aware of the correlation between tourism and economic development in rural communities,” Barclay remarked.  “She has the passion and the skills necessary to explore and enhance opportunities for Allegany County.”

Workman has personal pride in this region and emphasized: “Allegany County is rich in assets with the Great Allegheny Passage, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, historical landmarks, a growing arts community, not to mention the wealth of hidden gems that build the story to travel to our region.”

“We are very pleased to have Ashli represent Allegany County as the new Director of Tourism,” commented Jacob C. Shade, President of the Board of County Commissioners. “She is a versatile and seasoned professional.”

The current Director of Tourism Barbara G. Buehl will work with Workman to ensure a smooth transition.

A native and life-long resident of Allegany County, Workman earned a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications and Theatre from Frostburg State University. A double major, Workman graduated magna cum laude in 2008.  She is a Beall High School graduate.

Workman lives in Midlothian with her husband and their two-year old daughter.
