Flight 93 Ceremonies on Sunday

September 8th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

A 93-foot-tall tower with 40 wind chimes honoring the passengers and crew members of United Flight 93 will be dedicated on Sunday at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville.  The Tower of Voices is the last piece of the Flight 93 National Memorial, which rests on more than 2,000 acres of land owned by the National Park Service. The commemorative aspects of the memorial allows people to learn about what happened but also reflect on the heroic actions and impact of the Flight 93 passengers and crew. Many school groups that visit the site include students who weren’t alive the day of the attacks.  The design and construction of the tower, which totaled nearly $6 million, was completed with a grant from the National Park Foundation.  It will be dedicated during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, the Somerset County Commissioners will host a noon event paying tribute to the crew of the USS Somerset, who will be in town to attend the Tower of Voices dedication ceremony and September 11th anniversary observance.
