Great Strides Walk at Allegany College set for April 27th

April 16th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Allegany College of Maryland’s respiratory therapy class of 2019 will hold the college’s annual walk to raise funds to battle cystic fibrosis, Great Strides/A Mission for Mya, on Saturday, April 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  The event is held on the mile track near the Physical Education Building on ACM’s Cumberland campus. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.  The walk is dedicated to Mya Harris, whose life-long battle with cystic fibrosis sadly ended in 2012. The daughter of Hope and Jon Harris of Frostburg, Mya was a fourth-grader when she passed away at the age of nine. In planning the Great Strides/Mission for Mya walk, the second-year respiratory therapy students are collaborating with Linda Twigg, a 2013 ACM respiratory therapy graduate and Harris family friend.  Cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease affecting children and young adults, leads to chronic and life-threatening lung infections and digestive system impairment. More than 30,000 Americans are living with cystic fibrosis, and approximately 1,000 new cases are diagnosed annually in the U.S. For more information about the walk, please contact Paula Fuller, ACM professor and respiratory therapy program director, at 301-784-5522 or pfuller@allegany.edu.
