June 10th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

The Bishop Walsh School Board and Principal Ann Workmeister announced today that Brian Mullaney of Ocean City, Md., will be the new athletic director of Bishop Walsh School, effective immediately.  Mullaney is replacing James Zamagias, who will be taking on more of an administrative role at the Catholic school in his current position as dean of academic affairs.  Zamagias has been head of Spartan athletics for the past 17 years.

Mullaney, a native of Western Maryland and a 1980 graduate of Bishop Walsh, previously served as the assistant men's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Hagerstown College.  At HC, he oversaw and coordinated basketball operations and daily schedules for the championship team, acted as a fund raiser, managed player development and forged strong relationships with high schools and coaches across the country.  In addition, he has coached youth basketball and was an assistant basketball coach at the high school level.  The majority of Mullaney's professional career has been as an award-winning sales director/manager for several Maryland Eastern Shore-based companies, including Centric Business Systems, Document Company and Lanier Worldwide, Inc.

"We are very excited that someone with Brian's passion for high school athletics is joining our team.  He has a strong vision for the future of Bishop Walsh athletics," says Principal Ann Workmeister.  "Everyone at Bishop Walsh is indebted to Jim Zamagias for his many years of service to our athletic programs and our Spartans."

According to Workmeister, Zamagias will be available during the transition to share his knowledge and history with Spartan athletics with Mullaney.

"Bishop Walsh has a longstanding reputation for excellence in academic achievement and there are plans to expand and enhance those offerings.  I'm excited to be a part of these new academic efforts," says Zamagias, who has been a member of the Social Studies Department of the school for 35 years. "I will miss the daily interaction with the student athletes and coaches and wish Brian the best as the new athletic director."

Bishop Walsh School is the only Catholic school of the Archdiocese of Maryland in far Western Maryland and serves families in the local tri-state area. For more information on Bishop Walsh and its athletic programs, visit online at www.bishopwalsh.org.
