Rock Debris Cleared at Paw Paw Tunnel

April 19th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Crews at Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park have cleared the stone debris off the canal towpath just downstream of the Paw Paw Tunnel and it is now re-opened. In January, a significant rockslide occurred near towpath mile 155, park officials said.  Due to concerns related to the potential threat for additional rockslides, park work crews and visitors had been prohibited from entering the area. Park visitors were detoured over the mountain along Tunnel Hill Trail. Work on clearing the slide was delayed until a thorough geotechnical analysis could be accomplished to ensure that park workers could clear the debris safely and determine if any stabilization work was needed. This analysis was made possible by a donation from the Allegheny Trail Alliance. Bill Atkinson provided a brief update during this months meeting of the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority noting that the rock slide had actually had a negative impact on tourism.
