Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam

On December 31, 2019 the Allegany County Sheriff's Office received numerous calls pertaining to a telephone scam. Individuals residing in Maryland and surrounding areas are receiving telephone calls from unknown subjects who identify themselves as a member of the Allegany County Sheriff's Office. The caller claims that the person contacted has an active federal warrant and they are directed to call an additional number. Several of the calls have used the name Jonathan Moore and Lieutenant Michael Ellis. The Allegany County Sheriff's Office DOES NOT employ anyone with those names and the calls are not valid. According to one complainant, the caller eluded to needing credit card information to process the so called "federal warrant". DO NOT RELEASE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION TO SOMEONE OVER THE PHONE.

 

IF ANYONE RECEIVES A CALL SIMILAR TO THIS PLEASE IGNORE IT, THIS IS A SCAM. DO NOT CALL ANY NUMBERS BACK OR RESPOND IN ANY WAY TO THESE FICTITIOUS CLAIMS.
