Snow Days force School Board to amendment it’s calendar

February 22nd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Board of Education voted at the February 19th Open Session on several changes to the current 2018-2019 school calendar in order to make up several days lost to inclement weather. They voted to reclaim Monday, March 4, 2019, as a student make-up day. March 4th was originally scheduled as a day off for students in order to hold parent conferences. This will now be a 3-hour delayed opening for students, with parent conferences being held in the morning. Parents should contact their child’s school for conference times.

The school board also granted the request to seek a waiver from the Maryland State Department of Education to reclaim April 22, 2019, Easter Monday, as a second make-up day. Certain legal holidays, of which Easter Monday is one, require approval from the state before a local school board can have school in session. Pending state approval, April 22nd will also be a 3-hour delayed opening for students.

Also approved at the meeting was the extension of the third marking period from April 1, 2019, to April 5, 2019. As a result of this extension, Tuesday, April 2, 2019, will now be a full instructional day for students, and Friday, April 5, 2019, will be a 3-hour delayed opening with the morning being used for teacher work time. Report cards will now be posted in Aspen on Monday, April 15, 2019.

Finally, the school board approved the request to seek a waiver from MSDE, if necessary, regarding the end of the school year. To date, ACPS has missed eight instructional days due to inclement weather. Pending no further closures and the approval of the state’s waiver to reclaim Easter Monday, the last day for students will be June 13, 2019.
