May 17th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

On 5/16/16 at approx. 1932hrs, officers from the Cumberland Police Department were dispatched to the 600 block of Maryland Avenue for a subject who was assaulted with a handgun.  Officers arrived on the scene and learned that two males fled on foot.  A clothing description was given to other officers in the area.  Officers observed two subjects in the area of Putman Street that matched the description given by the victim.  Officers made contact with the subjects who were later identified as Tracy Kerry Williams and Micah Vincent Cheeves.  When officers attempted to pat down the subjects for weapons, Williams attempted to flee.  Officers had a brief struggle with Williams before being able to gain control of the subject and place him in hand restraints.  Cheeves was also detained without incident.  Once Williams was detained he was found to be in possession of a loaded semi-automatic handgun.  A witness of the assault on Maryland Avenue was transported to the Putman Street area where a positive identification was made of the two subjects detained by officers.  Officers continued to investigate the incident and talk with both victims and witnesses.  Officers learned that Williams and Cheeves approached the victims and demanded that they empty their pockets.  Once one of the victims was placed on the ground he was struck in the head with the weapon several times.  The victim was transported to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center by Cumberland Fire Department ambulance for non life threatening injuries. Both Cheeves and Williams were transported to Police Headquarters for processing and to await a hearing in District Court.  Allegany County C3I unit assisted the patrol division with the investigation.  Both Williams and Cheeves were taken before the District Court Commissioner for a hearing. Williams was held on a $100,000.00 and Cheeves was held on $70,000.00.  Williams was also found to have an active arrest warrant from Prince George’s County, MD for 2nd degree assault.  That warrant was held pending the outcome of his local charges.
