YMCA Event At Rocky Gap

May 26th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The YMCA of Cumberland will host the 29th Annual Rocky Gap Sprint Triathlon and 2nd Annual Duathlon on Sunday, June 5, 2016. Athletes can participate in the sprint triathlon by swimming ¼ miles in Lake Habeeb, biking 8 miles along Pleasant Valley Road and running a 5K along the lake and returning via Pleasant Valley Road or may opt to participate in the duathlon event which consists of a 5K run, 8 mile bike and 5K run on the same scenic course.

“Our event is the perfect way for a triathlete/duathlete to shake off the cobwebs and fine tune their start for the season. It’s also a great ‘first’ race for one seeking the challenge of completing a swim-bike-run or a run-bike-run event.” says Jamie Wright, Race Director and Aquatics Director/Head Swim Coach at the Y.

Rocky Gap State Park Rangers and Wright have developed a new run course for this year’s race. “The 5K (approximately 3.1 mile) run course offers several different types of terrain with a downhill asphalt finish and is relatively free from traffic which keeps our racers safe.” says Wright.

Dr. Ian MacFawn has participated in the Rocky Gap Triathlon since its inception and looks forward to this year’s event. “After 28 years and over 150 triathlons, the Rocky Gap Y Tri is still the prettiest course and my favorite of all the races I’ve competed in.” he shares. “My son, Ian, completed his very first triathlon with the kid’s Rocky Gap Y tri at the age of 3. He had training wheels on his bike.” Both Ian MacFawn and his sister, Lauryn MacFawn, are past Rocky Gap Triathlon top finishers.
