On Monday, June 12th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police responded to the area of Paca St and Lee St for the report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers contacted the juvenile victim of the alleged assault. The victim alleged that they were traveling in a vehicle with Luis Romero, 47, of Cumberland MD. An argument was said to have begun inside the vehicle and the juvenile was able to get out of the vehicle. Arrest Warrant Issued

On Monday, June 12th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police arrested Allen Ricardo Jones Jr, 29, of Baltimore MD. Jones was arrested on an active Arrest Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court for an incident that occurred on June 10th. During that incident, officers responded to UPMC to speak with an assault victim. The victim alleged to have been assaulted the day before, which had led to them seeking medical attention. Criminal Summons Service

On Monday, June 12th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police served a Criminal Summons on Preston Ernest McLaughlin, 70, of Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on June 11th, in the area of Queen City Drive. During that incident, it is alleged that McLaughlin was observed kicking a dog owned by him who had gotten off a leash. It is also alleged that he then assaulted a female subject who was attempting to help him secure his loose dog. Caporale Upbeat About Business

Allegany County Commissioners President Dave Caporale recently spoke to WCBC about what he is hearing as far as new businesses locating in the county as well as present businesses sticking around.  There are currently plans for Sierra Hygiene Products, a subsidiary of Webstaurant, to expand their business in the Frostburg Industrial Park – already a 100,000 square foot facility.  In addition, Caporale stated that talks are in progress with a medical waste recycler from the Frederick area that would like to expand into Allegany County.  The commissioner said that the county is open for business – interested parties are always…

Gas Tax Increases July 1

Coming July 1, Marylanders will have to dig a little deeper to fill up their gas tanks.  A tax increase going into effect on gasoline will bring the state’s gas tax to 47 cents per gallon on top of the 18 cents per gallon federal tax.  That makes the rate one of the highest in the country.  Maryland has tied its formula for gas tax increases to the CPI – the Consumer Price Index – which tracks the rate of inflation, along with the average cost per gallon of gas over the year. Weisenmiller Continues to be Honored in Luxembourg

Concluding a look at the 79th anniversary of D-Day, Christian Pettinger was a guest on the Dave Norman program along with members of the Squires family.  Pettinger lives in Luxembourg, a country adjacent to Germany and is part of a history club which takes care of the graves of soldiers  – in particular Cumberland native Bill Weisenmiller.  The Cumberland resident was killed in October of 1945 when a train hit the truck Weisenmiller was traveling in en route to a bivouac location.  He and other soldiers involved in the accident are remembered with a memorial and are buried in the…

CSX Helps Rail Museum Kick Off Bicentennial Campaign

Celebrating 200 years of railroading in the state of Maryland, CSX Corporation has made a gift of $5 million dollars to the B&O Railroad Museum to help prepare for railroad’s bicentennial anniversary in 2027.  The donation will be used to build the “CSX Bicentennial Garden” which includes an amphitheater and multi-use space.  CSX is the first corporate donor for the $30 million dollar campaign which will provide for state-of-the-art educational space and the new Innovation Hall – an area focused on current and future railroad technology and display of the railroad’s historical archives which has not been possible before.  CSX…

Liberty Street will be closed today

Liberty Street will be closed today for construction between Frederick Street and Pershing Street between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM on Tuesday, June 13th.. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Traffic is expected to be restored on both days by 6:00 PM.

Maryland Attorney General’s Office Joins Effort Combatting Elder Financial Abuse

Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown today joined other state officials and consumer protection groups to launch PROTECT Week, a statewide awareness and public education campaign focused on protecting older Americans and vulnerable adults from financial exploitation. PROTECT Week is an annual initiative anchored around Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15. One in five seniors over age 65 have been the victims of fraud, losing a staggering $2.9 billion a year to identity thieves and con artists.
