Governor Moore released the following statement regarding Maryland’s Red Alert Air Quality Condition resulting from the Canadian Wildfires: “We are working in close coordination with the Maryland Department of the Environment and Maryland Department of Health to monitor the impact that wildfires burning in Quebec, Canada are having on air quality both in Maryland and across the region. The Maryland Department of the Environment is advising Marylanders to expect unhealthy air conditions today through at least Thursday as smoke and fine particles produced from the wildfires continue to spread over the region. Assault, Destruction of Property, Threat of Arson Arrest
On June 7th, 2023 at approximately 8:40 hours officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 500 block of Cumberland Street for a reported disturbance. Upon officer’s arrival they spoke with two victims, who advised that Damon Claycomb had created a disturbance inside the residence. Claycomb then escalated from creating a disturbance, to assaulting one of the victims, destroyed their property, and threatened to burn their residence down. Claycomb was placed under arrest and taken before a District Court Commissioner where he was held without bond. Arrest: Damon Schyler Claycomb, age 21, Cumberland Maryland. Fugitive from Justice Arrest
On June 7th, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served a Fugitive Warrant on Stephen Barbour. The original Arrest Warrant was issued by Mineral County Courts for attempted first degree murder. Barbour was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center pending his extradition to West Virginia. Arrest: Stephen Christian Barbour, age 37, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Fugitive from Justice.
Cessna Crash Investigation Continues
The Cessna Citation that crashed in the George Washington National Forest on Monday claimed the lives of the pilot and three passengers. The Federal Aviation Administration is still investigating what happened to the plane that caused fighter jets to be scrambled after it entered the “do not fly” zone near the DC Capital. Fighter pilots flying at supersonic speed caught up to the plane and reported that the pilot was unconscious at the controls. The passengers on the plane included the daughter and granddaughter of John Rumpel, owner of Florida’s Encore Motors franchise. The child’s nanny was also on board.
School Board Approves Budget, Additional Security Funding
The Allegany County School Board received a finance update from Chief Financial officer Larry McKenzie at the June board meeting. The budget is actually 1.2% less than fiscal year 2023, coming in at just over $127.8 million dollars. McKenzie told board members that the budget represents all the areas they wanted to cover… The budget was then approved by the board and immediately amended with a motion to add $250,000 from the fund balance to finance further security needs, an issue addressed by board President Bob Farrell…
New Police Officers Sworn In
The Cumberland City Police Department has two new officers sworn in at this week’s City Council Meeting. Jonathan Skelly and Austin Groves took their oath from Mayor Ray Morriss. Police Captain James Burt explained the training that both Skelly and Groves participated in to become City police officers… Mayor Morriss told the Dave Norman show that the city’s police department is well accepted by the community…
Leadership Allegany Class of 2024 Taking Applications
The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce is organizing its next Leadership Allegany program to begin in late September. Beginning in 1997, the program seeks those who are likely to assume greater responsibility within the community as well as newly committed individuals wanting to make a difference in the county. Executive Director Juli McCoy explains an overview of the program… McCoy also noted that the program is a great way for people who have recently moved into the area to become aware and involved in the community… The Class of 2024 is limited to 20 participants and no prerequisites are required. …

WV WIC Program Replaces Paper Coupons
The WV WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), administered by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR), Bureau for Public Health, Office of Nutrition Services, has replaced its paper coupon booklet system with WIC Farm Market Direct, an electronic platform. As part of the new system, WV WIC FMNP participants will have a QR Code affixed to their eWIC card, allowing for electronic transactions with authorized farmers market vendors, and can check their card balance through a web-based portal. Through WIC Farm Market Direct, authorized farmers scan the QR Code on the member’s eWIC card with a…
