Mineral County Schools Revises Last Day for Students

Mineral County Schools has updated its calendar for the end of the current school year.  The final day for students will now be Tuesday, May 30th with report card distribution and May 31st will be a Professional Learning Day for staff.

Tips Needed for Meyersdale Theft

Police in Somerset County are looking into the theft of over $11,000 from a home in Meyersdale.  Authorities say someone broke into a home in the 400 block of Main Street using a garage door and stole money and other items before leaving the property.  Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call the Pennsylvania State Police Somerset detachment at 814-445-4104.

Governor Moore Announces $15 Million Available for Small Business Relief

Governor Wes Moore announced a $15 million commitment to minority-led small business lender Lendistry to provide relief to Maryland small businesses. The commitment is the latest investment through the State Small Business Credit Initiative, through which Maryland is deploying up to $198 million in federal relief. “As the first Community Development Fund Institution to begin offering loans through Maryland’s State Small Business Credit Initiative program, Lendistry will unlock opportunities for small businesses to grow and expand in the state,” said Gov. Bench Warrant Arrest

On Monday, May 15th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police arrested William Joseph Dibuono, 55, of Cumberland MD. Dibuono was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County Circuit Court on May 12th. It was alleged that Dibuono violated the terms and conditions of pre trial release that stemmed from a previous charge of use/disclose signature. Dibuono was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Marylanders need to address their health coverage

Gov. Justice has appointed Robert E. Ryan as Judge for the 21st Judicial Circuit

Gov. Jim Justice announced Friday that he has appointed Robert E. Ryan as Judge for the 21st Judicial Circuit, which serves Mineral, Grant, and Tucker counties.  Ryan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from WVU in 1996 and then went on to attend Washington and Lee University School of Law where he obtained his Juris Doctor in 2000. Currently, Ryan is licensed to practice law in four states – West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, as well as in five of the United States District Courts. 

Railway Safety Act of 2023 off to Senate for consideration

The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation has voted to send the Railway Safety Act of 2023, sponsored in part by U.S. Senators Bob Casey and John Fetterman to the full Senate for consideration. The proposed legislation is designed to prevent future train derailments by improving rail safety procedures and protocols and increasing fines for wrongdoing by rail carriers. Republican Caucus asking Governor Moore to veto Gun Safety Act of 2023

The Maryland House Republican Caucus has sent a letter to Governor Wes Moore asking him to veto Senate Bill1 – the Gun Safety Act of 2023.  The Caucus tells the governor in the letter that the bill is unconstitutional in its attempt to expand locations where carrying is prohibited in direct violation of 2nd and 14th Amendment rights.  The letter states in part, “The bill will do little to curb the rate of violent crime in Maryland. Oakland resident Brenda Butscher passed away

Long time Oakland resident Brenda Butscher passed away on May 9th at the age of 82 in Stuart, Florida.  Butscher served as chair of the Garrett County Republican Central Committee for 12 years and was also the executive director of Hospice of Garrett County for 25 years. She served as a county commissioner, chair of the Liquor Control Board and was also a former owner of WMSG/WXIE Radio. Newman Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements for the family.
