On Friday, April 21st, 2023, The Cumberland City Police responded to a Westview Terrace residence for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival on scene, officers made contact with the complainants. They advised that while taking out the garbage, an intoxicated neighbor began to yell at them. It was then learned that the complainants had an active peace order which prohibited the neighbor from having any contact with them. Hampshire Woman Charged
A Hampshire County woman has been charged with malicious wounding after an incident Thursday in Shanks, WV. Jill R. Cummings, 44, was being held on $30,000 bond at the Potomac Highlands Jail in Augusta. Cummings is accused of shooting a man in the leg after an argument.
Congressman Trone Visits Carver Center
Sixth District Congressman David Trone visited Cumberland Friday. Trone has requested two million dollars from Congress to help renovate the Carver Center on Frederick Street. Renovations on the building will take about a year to complete once funding is secured and house the Boys and Girls Club currently operating from Banneker Gardens.
Cardin/VanHollen Vote For Fire Grants
U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin (both D-Md.) voted to pass the Fire Grants and Safety Act, bipartisan legislation to reauthorize the U.S. Fire Administration along with funding for the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) programs for the next several years. CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED
On April 20th, 2023 the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Hannah Elizabeth Miltenberger. The summons was issued as a result of a hit and run that occurred on March 22nd, 2023. An investigation was conducted into the incident and Miltenberger admitted to being the operator of the motor vehicle. An officer then filed for charges at District Court. Miltenberger signed for her copy of the summons and was released pending trial at District Court. BENCH WARRANT SERVED
On April 20th, 2023 the Cumberland Police Department served two bench warrants on Nicole Rose Bunner. The warrants were issued as result of Bunner failing to appear for court on April 25th, 2016. She was originally charged with animal cruelty. Bunner was placed under arrest and transported to central booking. MARYLAND STATE POLICE INVESTIGATING AFTER BODY OF CHILD RECOVERED FROM GARRETT COUNTY POND
The body of a child was recovered from a pond after being reported missing Thursday in Garrett County. The body of Fox Piper, 4, of Oakland, Maryland, was recovered at about 10 p.m. on Thursday by members of the Deep Creek Fire Department Dive Team. He was declared deceased at the scene. The recovery occurred following a multi-agency search for the child. Confederate History Month Celebration will be held this Saturday
The annual Confederate History Month Celebration will be held this Saturday at 2pm at the Pollack Family Cemetery off River Road. Ed Taylor, Jr of the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization tells WCBC that the celebration includes a history reading and memorial service. Members of the Pollack family buried in the cemetery were States’ Rights sympathizers during the Civil War but were not slave-holders. Two significant family graves are located in the cemetery… The event is designed to be educational for the entire family.
Western Maryland Delegation Remarks on Relationship with Governor Moore’s Administration
The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce hosted its 2023 Legislative Wrap-up Luncheon on Thursday with most of the Western Maryland delegation in attendance. Senator Mike McKay remarked that the relationship with Governor Wes Moore’s administration started out well, but there were some bumpy spots along the way of the session. Jason Buckel also noted that the new Governor’s attentions tend to go to certain parts of the state moreso than others.
Allegany County Commissioners put forth $111 million proposed budget
The Allegany County Commissioners put forth the proposed 2024 budget at Thursday’s meeting. The $111 million-plus budget is an increase of 9.8% from 2023 and is highlighted by no tax increases for county citizens. County Administrator Jason Bennett in going through the budget explanation, noted that most of the county revenue comes from a limited number of sources.
