On April 19, 2023 the Grand Jury for Allegany County indicted 40 year old Holly Faye Wright, a Deputy with the Allegany County Sheriff's Office, after hearing testimony and reviewing audio evidence related to an alleged fraud first reported to the Maryland State Police by the victim, Wright's ex-husband, on March 3, 2023. After an extensive investigation by the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I), evidence was discovered that Wright had illegally accessed on line a bank account belonging to the ex-husband only, not a joint account, and removed monies from that account. PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENT PROJECT ON MD 42 (FRIENDSVILLE ROAD) IN GARRETT COUNTY

 The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a project on Friday, April 21, to improve the pavement on MD 42 (Friendsville Road) between Buffalo Run Road and the Pennsylvania state line in Garrett County. The project should be completed by the end of May, weather permitting. The project includes drainage ditch clearing for improved highway drainage, as well as milling, paving and restriping. Motorists can expect single-lane closures with a flagging operation, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Gov. Justice announces release of $12.7 million in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation Funds

 Gov. Jim Justice released today more than $12.7 million in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation Funds dedicated to infrastructure renovation, dam restoration, stream restoration, and wastewater treatment projects. HUD defines mitigation funds as those activities that increase resilience to disasters and reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of loss of life, injury, damage to and loss of property, and suffering and hardship, by lessening the impact of future disasters. A busy morning for Allegany County Emergency Services currently out working a house fire in Keyser. Initial reports of the house explosion catching an adjacent residence on fire. Mutual aid in effect, multiple fire crews are on scene at this time. 

FCC has terminated radio station license WQZS in Meyersdale

The FCC has terminated the license of Meyersdale radio station WQZS after determining that owner Roger Wahl “lacks the qualifications to remain a Commission licensee.”  Whal had pled guilty in 2020 to criminal charges including reckless endangerment, unlawful dissemination of intimate images and tampering with evidence.  The Federal Communications Commission is also dismissing a petition asking to transfer the station’s license to Wahl’s daughter, Wendy Sipple. WQZS had been allowed to continue broadcasting during the FCC’s investigation but now has until May 22 to go off the air.

CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Kimberly Appold.  The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing for charges against Appold at the District Court of Allegany County.  Appold signed for her copy of the summons and was released pending trial.
