Mckay supports legislation addressing blight

The Senate Environment, Education, and Energy Committee this week heard Senator Mike McKay's testimony on Senate Bill 296: Whole Homes Repair Act of 2023. The Senator raised the issue of blight, workforce retention, seniors aging in place, and emigration away from our area. Senate Bill 296 will begin as a pilot program but, if implemented statewide, will work to rectify those issues with grants made available to the local jurisdictions as well as non-governmental organizations from the Federal and State governments. With these grants, blight stricken homes and buildings can be fixed and renovated, which includes homes of seniors. This…

Mexican cartels are in Maryland

A DEA agent sounded the alarm at a news conference this week, warning that Mexican cartels and their drugs are in Maryland. The notice from Jarod Forget, the DEA special agent in charge of the Washington division office, came as Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown announced the indictments of six people on allegations they trafficked large amounts of cocaine from Houston, Texas, to Baltimore County. “Let me be clear, the Mexican cartels are here and their drugs are here in Maryland. They do not care about the wellbeing of our citizens, and they are flooding and poisoning our neighborhoods with drugs like cocaine, meth,…

Md. Gov. Moore’s administration halts Hogan attempt to scale back state’s vehicle emissions testing

As former Gov. Larry Hogan (R) was heading out the door a few weeks ago, his administration attempted to push through changes to the state’s vehicle emissions inspection (VEIP) program — over the objections of environmentalists and a legislative panel that examines proposed state regulations. But now the new regulation — and an accompanying procurement process designed to execute the Hogan administration’s plan to scale back emissions inspections — has been put on hold. Although state agencies under Hogan had sought to limit the number of vehicles that required an emissions test, the decision by the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) and the Department…

Maryland’s Secretary of Appointments, Tisha Edwards, presented the first round of Green Bag appointments to Governor Wes Moore–these appointments are a continuation of the Moore-Miller Administration’s promise to create a historically inclusive and experienced state government. “I made a commitment to Marylanders that we would create a government that looks like the state of Maryland, and I am thrilled to say that our Office of Appointments has followed through on that promise by presenting a group of nominees that is both representative of our state and incredibly qualified,” said Governor Wes Moore. “These appointments represent an incredible shift toward inclusion…

Maryland looks at new ways to protect kids on social media

WTOP reports lawmakers in Maryland are proposing new protections for kids using social media, and many parents are on board. Christine McComas is from Howard County. Her daughter Grace was 15 when she died by suicide, after experiencing online bullying. The measure models a California law recently passed but is being challenged by a lobbying group representing several social media companies. The new legislation is called the Maryland Age Appropriate Design Code Act. It would, among other things, restrict data collection and profiling of children, require high-privacy settings by default, and turn off geolocation.
