President Joe Biden, First Lady to visit Maryland

The Maryland Democratic Party has  announced that President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will make an appearance in Maryland next week. An exact location and time have not been confirmed. The party said that those details would be made available in the coming days. The grassroots event is slated to take place on Thursday, Aug. 25.

Buglary Headlines busy 24 Hours for Police

On Wednesday at approximately 1:00 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 300 block of Frederick Street for a male suspect attempting to gain entry to a residence.  Upon arrival, police contacted the suspect, Aaron Clevenger, who was not cooperative.  Clevenger then attempted to gain entry to another residence in the officer’s presence.  Officers stopped Clevenger and detained him for questioning. After further investigation, Clevenger was placed under arrest and transported to the police station. Cumberland Police make Burglary Arrest

Cumberland Police Department serve criminal summons

On Tuesday, August 16, 2022, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Timothy Hewlin Sr.  The summons was issued in connection with a fraud investigation that began on July 28, 2022.  On this date, it was reported that Timothy Hewlin stole banking information and fraudulently withdrew money from the victim’s bank account.  After further investigation, police filed for charges against Hewlin at the District Court of Allegany County.  He was released pending trial after being served. Cumberland man charged with Trespassing

On Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at approximately 3:22 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department located Daniel Gibson III inside the Frederick Street parking garage.  Gibson had been told previously by officers that he was not allowed on the property.  The garage is also posted with “No Trespassing” signs.  Gibson was issued a criminal citation and released. City takes ownership of Fayette Street Bridge

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council has made official the purchase of the Fayette Street bridge- authorizing the execution of a Quitclaim Bill of Sale transferring ownership from CSX to the city. The city also approved a construction agreement with CSX outlining the terms for the removal and replacement of the bridge. The Fayette Street bridge is one of three West Side structures spanning CSX transportation rail lines- all three of which are in various states of disrepair and in need of replacement. . President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed the Democrats’ landmark climate change and health care bill- capping off a recent string of successes and encouraging news for his administration. Justice dismisses suggestion to let voters decide Abortion question

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice scoffed this week at a suggestion by Democratic lawmakers to let voters decide whether abortion should continue to be allowed in the state. During a legislative special session initiated by Justice last month, majority Republicans failed to pass legislation criminalizing abortion. Top Democrats last week asked Justice and leading GOP lawmakers to bring the Legislature back to consider a resolution to allow voters to consider a constitutional amendment for “reproductive freedom.” Justice said he wants no part of that and he once against chided lawmakers for playing politics…  

Maryland State Board of Elections seeks earlier count of mail-in ballots

he Maryland State Board of Elections has voted to file an emergency petition in court that seeks an earlier count of mail-in ballots for the general election in November. The board voted 4-0 to seek a legal remedy in hopes of speeding up the vote count for mail-in ballots, which have become much more popular with voters in the state. Meanwhile the board also voted to certify the results of July's primary. Locally the final voter turnout for Allegany County matched the state average of 26%.
