Moore Dips In Poll, Hogan Touts Approval
A new poll shows that Maryland Governor Wes Moore may be losing his grip on the high popularity ratings he’s had since taking office. A Maryland Now poll shows 50% of those surveyed still approve of Moore’s job performance but the gap between approval and disapproval is narrowing, dropping 13% in the past six months. Apparently in response to those results, former Governor Larry Hogan posted on his social media poll results from May that showed 76% who were asked approved of Hogan’s job as governor.
Detour Scheduled For Shades Lane Starting August 18
The City of Cumberland Water Department and Street Maintenance Division would like to notify the public that Shades Lane will be reduced to one-way eastbound traffic between Oakland Street and the City Limits, with a reduced speed limit of 15 MPH. This traffic adjustment will allow City crews to replace critical water infrastructure and perform pavement restoration. Work will begin Monday, August 18, 2025, and continue through Phase 1 of the project. This traffic pattern will remain in effect until November 1, 2025, unless otherwise noted. Mechanic Street Assault Arrest
On Monday, August 11, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 Block of North Mechanic Street for a disturbance. Upon arrival, the Officers completed an investigation, and it was learned that a domestic assault had occurred. The suspect, Matthew O'Reilly, was not located on scene. An application for charges was completed, and an arrest warrant was issued. O'Reilly was located the next day and placed under arrest. Comptroller Announces Statewide Fiscal Training
Comptroller Brooke Lierman is setting forth comprehensive finance and accounting training for the state’s fiscal workforce. The training will provide learning opportunities for employees on state-specific accounting practices and skills used in the state’s Financial Management Information System. Lierman says the training will improve interactions with businesses, vendors, and other partners… “We’ve created the Maryland Accounting Academy, or MDAA, to support our state finance and accounting staff with access to centralized training and support tools that will help reduce confusion, speed up processing, and streamline our operations.”
Library System Offering Health Classes
The Allegany County Library System and the Allegany County Health Department have joined forces to host free community health and wellness classes. Ashley Swinford, the library’s marketing director, says local dietician-nutritionist Teresa Stahl is leading the classes. Flood Mitigation Moving Ahead For Milton
Governor Patrick Morrisey signed orders this week for land acquisitions, making it easier for Milton, West Virginia to build a long-awaited floodwall. The levee will be over a mile long and when completed by the US Army Corp of Engineers will redirect part of the Mud River, protecting 600 homes. Milton experienced a 100-year flood in 2023. George Street Parking Garage Arrest
On Monday, August 11, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the George Street parking garage for a nuisance complaint. Upon searching the area, Officers located two individuals trespassing at the top of the garage who appeared to be using a controlled dangerous substance. The Officers made contact with Samantha Nelson and Jason Stottlemyer and were able to observe paraphernalia in plain view. The Officer then advised Nelson that she was under arrest. Dwight Myers "Casey" Lambert, 86 of Ridgeley passed away on August 9, 2025. Mr. Lambert was a 1957 graduate of Ridgeley High School and worked at the Kelly Springfield TIre Company from 1958 to 1999. Re retired as Vice President of Purchasing. After retirment, he served on the Carpendale Town Council and was Mayor of Carpendale for three terms. Arrangements are being handled by the Adams Family Funeral Home.
