America’s 9-11 Ride will be coming through Cumberland Friday morning between 8:30 and 9:30. Governor Announces ICE Agreements

Governor Patrick Morrisey announced on Wednesday that West Virginia has signed agreements with ICE – Immigration and Customs Enforcement , West Virginia State Police, and the Department of Corrections to assist in rounding up illegal aliens, giving them specific immigrations enforcement functions.  Morrisey said the effort would make state residents safer in their communities….     “This gives them the ability to interrogate any alien or person believed to be an alien as to his right to remain in the United States.  To process for violations those individuals who have been arrested for state and federal criminal offenses.”

Grantsville Woman Arrested After Traffic Stop and K-9 Alert

On August 11, 2025, Detectives with the Narcotics Task Force arrested Mandy Sue Warnick, 40 years old, Grantsville, for felony drug charges. Around 11:00 p.m. deputies stopped a vehicle along Bittinger Road near Dung Hill Road for traffic violations. During the course of the traffic stop, a Sheriff’s Office K-9 was utilized and conducted a K-9 scan of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert. WVU Fall Semester Prep Underway

Preparations for the 2025-26 fall semester at West Virginia University start this week, and students will settle into classrooms by Wednesday, August 20. First, the incoming class will have a series of events to help them get to know their new surroundings.  The move-in process will get started Thursday and runs through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Salisbury University Hate Crime Charges

A total of 13 former Salisbury University students have now been sentenced in connection to a hate crime and assault investigation that began with an alleged ambush off-campus late last year.  Investigators say that a Salisbury University student posed as a 16-year-old boy on a dating app to lure an adult male victim to an off-campus apartment on the pretense of sex on October 15, 2024. When the man arrived, police say a group of 15 students, all affiliated with a Salisbury fraternity, ambushed and assaulted him. August Dry Spell Ends in Pittsburgh

For the first time since the late 1800s, the City of Pittsburgh had no rain for nearly two weeks to start off August — until Wednesday.  The last time a dry spell like this occurred in August was in 1887, when dry conditions were recorded for the first nine days of the month.

Byrd Named Director At Hillman Cancer Center

John C. Byrd, MD, a physician-scientist in hematologic malignancies, has been named director of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Together with the University of Pittsburgh, Hillman is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and one of the country’s largest academic cancer treatment networks. Dr. Byrd will assume responsibility for all aspects of cancer-related basic, translational, and clinical research and education at both the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Hillman in November.

Tax Free Week Continues Through Saturday

Maryland’s Tax Free week continues through Saturday, August 16. Families shopping for back to school items will be able to avoid the state’s 6% sales tax on the purchase of clothing and shoes as well as a portion of backpack purchases.  The annual Maryland tax holiday comes at a cost for the state – up to $9 million dollars in tax collections.  The tax savings does not apply to computers, phones, or other electronic devices.

Two New Possibility Shops Open

AHEC West has announced its expansion into Westernport and Oakland.  Those two locations will now host Possibility Shop services similar to those available in downtown Cumberland.  The Westernport Possibility Shop will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays at 221 Smoot Street.  The Oakland location will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 360 Liberty Street.  The Possibility Shops of AHEC West help visitors with resource navigation, health insurance information, and resources for those with Substance Use Disorder.
