The transfer of ownership of the former Memorial Hospital site from the city to the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation should be finalized by the end of the month- and indications are there is already strong interest coming from the private sector. Future plans for the location include construction of a housing development. Located in South Cumberland, the hospital was vacated in 2009 with the opening of a new hospital. Egle Nursing and Rehab Center in Lonaconing was one of only two Maryland nursing facilities awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the Maryland Patient Safety Center for its work on the Center’s Clean Collaborative. The Clean Collaborative is an initiative developed by the Patient Safety Center to improve facility cleanliness and reduce potential infections in the long term care setting. Death Investigation continues in Washington County
Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a man found in a wooded area near the highway in Washington County. The deceased is identified as Bryan Patrick Harley, 38, of Hagerstown, Maryland. Harley was reported as a missing person to the Hagerstown City Police Department. Attending physicians for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner noted no signs of trauma or obvious indications of foul play. Cause and manner of death is pending the results of an autopsy. Mineral County Board of Education Election Results
The Mineral County Board of Education will remain intact after Tuesday’s primary election. With 3,772 ballots were cast as of late Tuesday night, incumbent candidates Terry Puffinburger, Mary Jane Baniak and Lara Courrier all retained their seats. Courrier received the most votes with 1,918, Puffinburger received 1,739 votes, and Baniak received 1,601 votes.

Police Make Disturbance Arrest on Greene Street
On Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at approximately 8:09 PM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of George Washington Headquarters on Greene Street to check on well-being of an intoxicated subject. Officers contacted the subject and identified him as Steven Kienhofer. It was determined that he did not need any medical attention and the officer told him not cause any issues. A mother of an 11 year old who is in the Allegany County Public School system addressed the Board of Education Tuesday afternoon- expressing concern with how her daughter was treated during Halloween activities in her school. The woman described herself as being part of a Christian family practicing “biblical principals”- and she said Halloween is not a holiday that she embraces nor does she allow her children to participate. 25th Day of Caring and Sharing Scheduled for Friday
The annual United Way Day of Caring and Sharing is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Continuing a tradition that began in 1997 the county United Way Day of Caring and Sharing will be held this Friday.
