Mishaps Slow Traffic on Interstate 68

Just before 9:00 PM Saturday evening, the Joint Communications Center of Allegany County dispatched police, fire and EMS units to Eastbound Interstate 68 at the top of Haystack Mountain due to a vehicle accident. Traffic was able to get by in one lane during the initial response. However, there was a traffic backup as three lanes went to the single lane for about 15 minutes. 9-1-1 also sent units to the area of 68 east of Exit 42 for a mishap.  That instance was reported prior to 9:30 PM and interrupted traffic flow for a short period of time.

Fire In Lower LaVale Battled Saturday Afternoon

Several fire companies assisted the LaVale Volunteer Fire Department in battling a house fire on National Highway. The initial call came in around 2:00 PM and National Highway had to be shut down for over an hour during the response, until around 3:30 PM. The Maryland State Fire Marshal is expected to issue a report in the coming days detailing the cause and damage amount  

Maryland Firearms Deer Season Underway

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced that the two-week firearms hunting season for sika and white-tailed deer opened Saturday and runs through Saturday, December 11.  “The two-week firearms season is our most popular season with deer hunters,” Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said. “The season traditionally has been a time for hunters to head to hunting camps or otherwise spend time with family and friends enjoying the outdoors. WV DHHR Issues Early COVID Update

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of November 24, 2021, there are currently 6,754 active COVID-19 cases statewide. Cumberland Christmas Tree Lighting Draws Crowd

A year after having to do a virtual version- the city of Cumberland’s holiday tree lighting ceremony returned live  Friday evening on the downtown mall. Despite frigid temperatures a large crowd was on hand for the festivities with Mayor Ray Morriss serving as Master of Ceremonies. Many downtown shops stayed open later for the occasion- and although there was social distancing guidelines in place, there was a visit from Santa Claus for the kids. 

Police Investigating Hit and Run

On  Friday at approximately 7:20 PM the Cumberland City Police Department were dispatched to the 300 Block of Bedford Street for a hit and run. Officers spoke to the victim and they advised their vehicle was parked behind a red vehicle. When they went to leave they observed a dent in the front bumper with red paint transfer. Woman Charged for interfering with Arrest

On Fridayt the Cumberland City Police Department served a Criminal Summons on Kelsi Sue May. On 10/17/2021 at approximately 2:00 AM an officer was administering field sobriety tests on a subject when May began yelling at the officer. May was not involved in the traffic stop at all and was only a passerby. The officer had to divert their attention multiple times to May and advise her not to interfere with the stop. The operator was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence and then officer was able to get May’s information. The officer applied for charges through the District…

Moderna COVID Booster Vaccine appointments Available

Moderna COVID-19 booster vaccine appointments are available for Wednesday, December 1 at the Allegany County Fairgrounds.  Interested individuals can register for an appointment at health.maryland.gov/allegany.  In order to be eligible for the booster vaccine you must be age 18 or older and meet one of the following criteria: Received your second dose of Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at least six months ago Received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID vaccine at least two months ago   The Allegany County Health Department will also offer other COVID-19 vaccinations at the fairgrounds on a walk-in basis December 1 from 9…

Cumberland Man Arrested on Thanksgiving

On Thursday, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Kaden Jean Crabtree charging him with disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct.  The summons was issued by District Court in reference to an incident that occurred back on November 21st, 2021 when officers responded for an assault complaint at an E. Second Street residence.  When officers arrived, Crabtree became argumentative and created a disturbance while officer attempted to investigate the complaint.  He signed and received copies of the charging documents and was released pending trial at District Court.   Kaden Jean Crabtree, age; 22, Cumberland, Maryland.

Gov. Hogan appreciates Marylanders shopping, eating local on Thanksgiving

Gov. Larry Hogan thanked Marylanders for shopping and eating local by incorporating products that were grown, produced, or harvested in Maryland into their Thanksgiving meals. "I want to wish you and your families a safe, happy, and blessed Thanksgiving." Agriculture continues to be Maryland's leading industry. The state is home to more than 160 turkey farms that sell approximately 100,000 turkeys annually. Maryland farmers harvest nearly 7,000 acres of potatoes, green beans, and pumpkins each year.
