On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Robert Morris.  The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing charges against Morris at the District Court of Allegany County.  Morris was released pending trial. Van Hollen Asks For Adoption of Funding Amendment

Maryland US Senator Chris Van Hollen spoke on the Senate floor recently asking that his amendment to keep the proposed FBI headquarters in Greenbelt be reconsidered. Delaney Secures Funding For WMD Projects

Over $3.6 million in federal funding will be coming to Allegany County for projects submitted in appropriations packages supported by Congresswoman April McClain Delaney. A release from Delaney’s office said projects included in the funding will be for the Frostburg State University Planetarium, waterline work in Lonaconing, fire engine replacement for Potomac Fire Company No. 2 and for the Cumberland membrane filtration building.

Potomac Valley Hospital Recognized

Becker’s Hospital Review has recognized WVU Medicine Potomac Valley Hospital as one of the top hospitals recommended by patients in West Virginia. The list is based on data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.  Data comes from patient star ratings in answer to a survey. Potomac Valley Hospital is one of only eight in the state to earn the distinction.

Westernport Pop-Up Libraries

The Allegany County Library System has announced pop-up libraries in Westernport while the community library is closed due to flood damage. Starting today, the ACLS van will be set up in the Westernport Library parking lot every Monday from 1 to 3pm through September. County Leaders See Precedent for Appeal

Allegany County continues recovery efforts from damages suffered in May’s flood, and county leaders are doing all they can to get FEMA to reverse their decision denying federal recovery funds. Special Session Possibility in WV

National Night Out Tuesday

Cumberland will be celebrating National Night Out along with cities across the country on Tuesday evening.  Events will be taking place along East First Street near the Salvation Army beginning at 5pm.  Exhibits, demonstrations, giveaways, games and the opportunity to interact with council members, law enforcement and fire personnel highlight the evening along with the national porchlight campaign – porch lights on at dusk and off at dawn to increase safety and reduce criminal activity. Aerial Rescue For Injured Rock Climber In West Virginia

Maryland State Police Aviation Command (MSPAC) performed an aerial hoist rescue on Saturday after a rock climber was injured in West Virginia. On August 2, at approximately 2:20 p.m., rescue personnel from Pendleton County, WV, were dispatched to a remote area on Seneca Rocks for an injured person that fell while rock climbing. Due to the victim’s remote location, extended extrication time, and the nature of their injuries, Maryland State Police Aviation Command was requested to perform an aerial hoist rescue. Trooper 5, the MSP helicopter based in Cumberland, MD, was dispatched to the mission by the SYSCOM Duty Officer….
