Cancer Mortality Rates Remain Steady In Area

Director of the UPMC Western Maryland Center for Breast Care, Dr. Blanche Mavromatis, spoke to WCBC regarding statistics for cancer mortality across the state. Mavromatis said although there has been a decrease in cancer mortality over the last 30 years of almost 50%, incidents of new cancer has increased… “The cancer mortality is decreasing markedly since 1989, about a 44% decrease. Halloween Events Slated At Constitution Park

Events at Constitution Park are taking shape for Halloween this year.  Sunday, October 27 from 4 to 7pm children 5-12 years of age can come and participate in happenings at the amphitheater and craft house.  While there will be some supply on hand, children are encouraged to bring their own treat bags to be filled with goodies. Victims of Crime Act Funds Awarded by Governor Justice

Burlington United Methodist Family Services and CASA of Mineral County are among 82 agencies in West Virginia receiving funds through the Victims of Crime Act. Over $16 million dollars will provide services for counseling, transportation, and support for victims of domestic or sexual violence, child abuse, and elder abuse. Governor Justice said a portion of the funding came through U.S. Department of Justice while other funding was provided through the state.

Louisiana Avenue Closure Begins Monday Morning

Starting Monday at 8 a.m., Louisiana Avenue will be closed from Kent Avenue to Oldtown Road.  Columbia Gas is making repairs in the area.  Louisiana Avenue will be closed in that area from October 14 through October 25.

Theft Arrest on Virginia Ave.

On Saturday, October 12, 2024 at approximately 7:39 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 500 block of Virginia Avenue for a shoplifting complaint.  Police contacted the staff who reported that the suspect stole merchandise from the store.  The suspect was identified as Rick Michel.  After further investigation, Michel was issued a criminal citation and released pending trial. Trespassing at UPMC Western Maryland Leads to Arrest

On Saturday, October 12, 2024 at approximately 9:16 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to UPMC Western Maryland for a male subject refusing to leave.  Officers contacted security who reported that William Socks had been advised to leave the property; however, he refused.  Police advised Socks multiple times to leave the property, yet he still refused.  Socks was arrested and transported to police headquarters. Pitt Scientists Validate New Lab Test Concerning Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, the academic partner of UPMC, have validated a new blood test platform for biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease. The new test can simultaneously measure more than a hundred biomarkers, which can improve early disease diagnostics. Researchers say capturing early molecular changes in brains of individuals at risk for Alzheimer’s allows tracking of disease progression and helps develop guidelines for early intervention.
