Dismantling DEI Initiatives May Harm PA Disability Rights

A Pennsylvania group is voicing concerns that an executive order signed by President Trump that targets diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives may negatively affect the disabled. Mallory Hudson with Keystone Progress Education Fund says a memo ordered the state Civil Rights Division to stop filing new complaints, motions or remands. “That means that the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division has been instructed not to file any new civil rights cases, right? And that includes ADA complaints. So, those are – that is one of the few ways that disabled people can even protect their civil rights.”

West Virginia Seeing Reduced Overdose Deaths

West Virginia’s Department of Human Services says it is seeing progress in reducing overdose deaths across the state. The latest data shows a decrease of 38% in the first seven months of 2024 compared to the same period a year before. Some cases are still pending, but the reduction is not expected to fall below 31%. Year over year figures for the 12 months ending in August 2024 show a 27.9% decline in overdose deaths in West Virginia, surpassing the national average of 21.7%

Steelers Will Play In Ireland

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to play their first international game since 2013. According to multiple reports, the Steelers will play in Dublin, Ireland in 2025. Steeler’s President Art Rooney’s grandfather Dan Rooney served as U.S. Ambassador to Ireland for several years. The Steelers are set to play the first NFL regular season game in Dublin at Croke Park. The full matchup, date, and kickoff time will be announced when the NFL schedule is finalized in the spring.

Maryland Dems Introduce Energy Bills

Maryland’s House and Senate leaders recently introduces three pieces of legislation designed to drive more home-made energy and ultimately lower utility costs. The bills center around speeding up construction of clean energy options, solar power and battery storage, and planning for future needs. House Speaker Adrienne Jones. “These bills will protect every day Marylanders from rising energy costs and they will protect our commitments to a more affordable and sustainable future.”

Winter Weather Advisory for Saturday

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Saturday from 9 a.m. until midnight Saturday.  Mixed precipitation is expected.

Fire At Old YMCA

3pm – Baltimore Street is closed at this time for a fire near the old YMCA at the intersection of Park Street and Baltimore Avenue.  Drivers should avoid the area and find an alternate route.

CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Friday, February 7, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Michael Wallace.  The summons was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on February 6, 2025.  On this date at approximately 7:10 PM, officers were contacted by the victim who reported that his vehicle had been tampered with and ransacked while it was in a parking lot off of N. Centre Street.  A suspect was later developed and identified as Michael Wallace.  After further investigation, police filed for charges against Wallace at the District Court of Allegany County.  Wallace signed for his copy of…

BENCH WARRANT SERVED

On Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Justin Braithwaite.  The warrant was issued as the result of Braithwaite violating probation on an original charge of CDS: Possess-Not Marijuana.  Braithwaite was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center on a $500 bond.  Braithwaite later posted a $500 unsecured personal bond after a bail review.
