Maryland Congressional Candidate Dan Cox is claiming that President Joe Biden is trying to intimidate him. Maryland Suspends Fraternity/Sorority Activities
Activities at all fraternities and sororities at the University of Maryland have been suspended indefinitely. Citing safety concerns but not specifically hazing, the school issued an initial warning on Thursday but after more reports of misconduct were received, a cease and desist order was made. West Virginia Working to Avoid “Clawback”
The State of West Virginia continues to work with the federal government to come to a settlement on a potential clawback of COVID funding. Over $465 million is on the table, mostly for education funding that was sent to county school boards. Last year, the state received a waiver, basically for not spending the money fast enough. Governor Jim Justice issued a statement Monday that there is no allegation of money being mishandled and negotiations with the Federal Department of Education are ongoing and a positive resolution is expected soon.

Canal Re-Watering Comes Back Around
Tonight’s Cumberland Mayor and City Council meeting sees an item on the consent agenda to enter into an agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers concerning the re-watering of the C&O Canal. The design portion of the project was initially approved in 2019, but was stalled by the Covid pandemic. The city will provide in-kind and financial contributions not to exceed $210,000. US Senators Cardin and Van Hollen have already earmarked $390,000 for the project. The public meeting begins at 6:15pm at City Hall.
Warrant Sweep Conducted
On Friday, March 1, 2024, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Cumberland Police Department, DPSCS Warrant and Apprehension Unit and Maryland State Police – Barrack C, combined resources to conduct a comprehensive warrant sweep. Water Disruption Planned For Tuesday In Gephart Drive Area
The City of Cumberland will be working on Tuesday, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Gephart Drive for a water leak repair. Water service will be interrupted on Gephart Drive, Thompson Avenue, Adams Avenue, Cleveland Avenue, and Dale Avenue.
Garrett School Superintendent Appointed
The Garrett County Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. Brenda McCartney to a four-year contract as the Superintendent of Schools. Dr. McCartney took on the position after Superintendent Barbara Baker retired in July of 2023. Maryland State Superintendent approval was received Friday. “I extend my best wishes to the Garrett County Board of Education and Dr. McCartney,” said Dr. Carey Wright, Interim State Superintendent of Schools. Dr. McCartney’s contract will run from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2028.
