Chamber of Commerce Throws Full Support to Riverside Park Project
The Riverside Park project is a favorite of local officials as they see great potential for tourism and economic growth. Campaign Finance Reports
Year-end campaign finance reports for the Republican candidates vying for the open District 6 Congressional seat show that Tom Royals, a former combat aviator, has raised the most money with almost $293,000 raised and $95,000 cash-on-hand. Mariela Roca had raised over $165,000 by the end of the year. The list also includes Neil Parrott whose report shows over $118,000 raised, but the Hagerstown resident has not yet filed to run for the office, according to the Board of Elections website. The filing deadline is Friday.
Repubs Draft Student Protection Act
House Republicans are drafting a bill – the Student Protection Act - in response to reports of a convicted juvenile sex offender attending high school in Baltimore City. The 15-year had pleaded guilty to second-degree rape in Harford County – the victim was three years old. Instead of incarceration, probation and counseling were recommended. Mini-Grants Awarded to Museums
The Canal Place Preservation Authority recently approved two mini grants to local non-profits. The Allegany Museum was granted $3,350 to develop architectural drawings for a new Mountain Traditions Exhibit. The Frostburg Museum received a grant of $1,429 to purchase new decals for the museum windows. The grant monies come through the Passages of the Western Potomac Heritage Area.
Lakemont Won’t Operate Rides This Season
Lakemont Park in Altoona will not operate their amusement rides this coming season, according to park officials. Citing lower attendance, high maintenance costs, and other financial challenges, officials said it was a difficult decision to make. Open since 1894, Lakemont is home to Leap-The-Dips, the oldest operating wooden rollercoaster in the world. The park will still maintain batting cages, basketball and volleyball courts, mini-golf, and picnic pavilions.
