Lawsuit claims Gang of White Officers controls a Hagerstown prison

5 black correctional officers at a Hagerstown, Maryland, prison say white officers are controlling the facility with a race-based “gang.” The white officers are accused of discrimination, retaliation and fraud, adding that they have also created a hostile work environment. The lawsuit is partially relying on the statute used in the prosecution of organized crime in a federal lawsuit being heard in Greenbelt District Court. The lawsuit names the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, the warden, security chief of the Maryland Correctional Training Center, two other prison employees and 25 John Does. Centre Street Closures

Centre Street will be closed to thru traffic between Dexter and Frederick Street on Friday, January 19th, from the times of 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day in order to allow safe demolition of the sidewalk and roadway. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Pedestrian access will be maintained. Traffic is expected to be restored after 4:00 PM Friday, January 19th.  

Criminal Summons

On Thursday, January 18th, 2024, The Cumberland City Police served a Criminal Summons on Paul Kenneth Lapp, 37, Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on January 6th in the 100 block of West Third St. During the incident, it is alleged that an intoxicated Shook was setting off fireworks at 1230 am which disturbed multiple residents in the area. Greene Street DUI Arrest

On Friday, January 19th, 2024, at approximately 3:00 am, The Cumberland City Police responded to the 200 block of Greene St for the report of a hit and run motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival on scene, officers observed a heavily damaged Lexus passenger vehicle that had crashed into a snow bank. Officers then made contact with the operator of the vehicle, Aaron Joseph Borho, 27, of Fort Ashby WV. Warrants Served

On Thursday, January 18th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Teresa Marie Walters, 56, of Cumberland MD. Walters was arrested on an active Arrest Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court for an incident that was first reported in July, 2023. During that incident, officers were contacted by an elderly victim who advised them of fraudulent activity regarding their finances. The investigation revealed Walters had been acting a caregiver for the victim for several months prior to the reported incident. Commissioner Atkinson says Riverside Park Project top priority

Over 300 people attended Thursday night’s annual PACE reception in Annapolis and many are expected to stay for Friday morning’s legislative breakfast.  Michele Martz has been the president of UPMC Western Maryland since 2020 and she said the health system has much to offer the area in terms of employment.     Mountain Maryland’s annual lobbying effort, the PACE reception, took place Thursday night in Annapolis.  Michele Martz is the president of UPMC Western Maryland and she is also a member of the Greater Cumberland Committee.  Martz told WCBC News that opportunities abound in the area.
