Parrot Contemplating District 6 Run

Fort Hill Hall of Fame to induct the late Hazel Lawler and Francis Yarnall

The We Are Fort Hill Committee will induct the late Hazel Elaine Lawler, class of 1974, and Francis “Pat” Yarnall, class of 1941, into the Fort Hill Hall of Fame at the annual luncheon in September. Hazel Lawler was a cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing and attended Virginia Commonwealth University as a graduate student in nursing. She served as a nurse in hospitals in Cumberland, Hagerstown, and Charlotte, NC, prior to moving to Clifton, VA. CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Sunday, July 9, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Heather Sager.  The summons was issued as the result of charges being filed against Sager by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Alternative Sentencing for an incident that occurred on June 29, 2023.  Sager signed for her copy of the summons and she was released pending trial. BENCH WARRANT SERVED

On Sunday, July 9, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Evan West.  The warrant was issued as the result of West failing to appear in court on July 6, 2023.  He was originally charged with a hit and run traffic offense.  West was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and released on his personal recognizance. City Council Raise First in 42 Years

Plans are in progress to allow for a pay raise for Cumberland Mayor and City Council members.  The annual rate of pay for the council has not been adjusted for 42 years – currently the Mayor receives $7,200 per year and council members $4,800.  The suggested raise would be more than double to $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.  According to council member Rock Cioni, the changes are being suggested on the recommendation of city staff who have been looking at pay grades for all employees… Mayor Morriss commented also that the officers of the Mayor and Council attend many functions in…

County Economic Development in “Good Spot”

Heritage Area Expansion Listening Session

A countywide listening session is scheduled for Wednesday to gather input on the plans to expand the Passages of the Western Potomac Heritage Area.  Formerly known as the Canal Place Heritage area, the session is taking place to discuss the expansion of the Area to include all of Allegany County.  DeDe Ritchie, Canal Place Executive Director, explained to WCBC expanding the area to the entire county benefits funding opportunities for capital and non-capital grants. Dapper Dan Championship Series Coverage

The Dapper Dan Championship Series begins tonight with the Pirates vs. the Tigers.  The Pirates won the regular season title with a 9-3 record and defeated the Athletics in the semifinals, while the Tigers went 7-5 in the regular season and took three games to defeat the Orioles in the semis.  During the regular season, the Pirates took 3 of 4 from the Tigers, who have won two straight titles.  Coverage begins tonight at 7 p.m. on WCBC.

Liberty Street will be closed Today and Tuesday

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Triton Construction, would like to notify the public that N. Liberty Street will be closed to thru traffic between Frederick Street and Pershing Street between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM on Monday, July 10th, and Tuesday, July 11th. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Pedestrian traffic will also be re-routed around the construction at the intersection with Baltimore Street.
