North Centre Street to be Closed Between Union and Frederick Streets on Thursday
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Rommel Construction, would like to notify the public that N. Centre Street will be closed to thru traffic between Union Street and Frederick Street from 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM on Thursday, September 7th. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Pedestrian traffic will also be re-routed around the construction at the intersection with Baltimore Street. Allegany County Sheriff’s Office & Maryland State Police Make Arrests Based on Warrants
As a result, the following individuals have been apprehended. Friday, September 1, 2023 Cory Joseph Crabtree, 32, of Cumberland, was arrested on two Circuit Court Bench Warrants: 1. Violation of Probation on the original conviction of Armed Robbery, 2. Failure to Appear on the original charges including: Theft $100 To Under $1,500, Theft Less than $100, Theft Scheme: $100 to <$1,500, and CDS: Possession – Not Cannabis. Rocky Gap Fund Disbursements Announced
Local Development Council Announces Rocky Gap Fund Disbursements to Municipalities & Nonprofits September 5, 2023 – Allegany County receives 5.5% of the slots revenues generated from the casino operation at Rocky Gap. According to State of Maryland Law, 20% of this revenue must be spent on capital requests from Allegany County municipalities and non-profits. On behalf of the Allegany County Commissioners, the Allegany County Local Development Council accepts applications for funding annually. Garden Club Thrift Sale Sept 9-10
The House and Garden Club of Frostburg is hosting their third Thrift Shop Sale on Sat, Sept 9 and Sun, Sept 10 from 9 am to 4 pm at Frostburg City Place, 14 South Water Street to raise money for beautification projects in Frostburg. Public Hearing This Evening on Mayor/Council Raises
Tonight’s Mayor and City Council meeting in Cumberland will include a public hearing on the proposed raise for council members. The annual rate of pay for the council has not been adjusted for 42 years – currently the Mayor receives $7,200 per year and council members $4,800. The suggested raise would be more than double to $15,000 and $10,000 respectively. The Mayor and Council meeting is scheduled for 6:15 this evening.
Oldtown Road Assault Arrest
On September 4, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Oldtown Road for a report of a domestic assault. Upon arrival Officers made contact with the victim who advised she was punched in the face by her boyfriend, Sean McElwee. Officers observed injuries consistent with the victim’s statement. McElwee was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. Arrest: Sean Patrick McElwee, age 45, Cumberland Maryland Charges: Assault 2nd degree.
Elm Street Domestic Assault Arrest
On September 4, 2023, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Elm Street for a report of a domestic assault. When Officers arrived they made contact with the victim and observed injuries sustained in the assault. Victoria Lynn Greer admitted to striking the victim in the head. The injuries were consistent with statements from both parties involved. As a result Victoria Lynn Greer was then placed under arrest and later released on personal Recognizance. Arrest: Victoria Lynn Greer, age 54, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Assault 2nd degree.
Fireside Fireball Train Debuts September 8th
Early fall means some new events happening at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. In addition to the upcoming Pumpkin Patch and Alpaca Trains, a special edition Fireside Fireball Train will run every other Friday evening, starting September 8th and features a new experience for riders. Whiskey Rebellion Combines History, Entertainment
History buffs and whiskey enthusiasts will be able to rub elbows with the likes of George Washington and Alexander Hamilton this month at the annual Whiskey Rebellion. Named after the 1791 uprising of farmers against a federal tax on liquor, it also commemorates George Washington’s last military effort and visit to Cumberland.
