Accusations Arise Against Local Contractor

Accusations arose at the most recent Allegany County Commissioners meeting concerning the bidding process for development at the former Allegany High School site.  West Side Neighborhood Association spokesperson Max Green addressed the commissioners in relation to a number of emails between the county, contractor Carl Belt, and D.R. O’Malley Confirmed As Social Security Administration Commissioner

Maryland’s former Governor, Martin O’Malley has a new job – he was confirmed Monday as the new commissioner of the Social Security Administration.  The Senate vote was 50-11 for confirmation with several senators already gone on their winter break. First Energy Working on Allegany Street Wednesday

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of First Energy, would like to notify the public that Allegany Street will be closed to thru traffic between Washington Street and Fayette Street between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM on Wednesday, December 20th, and Thursday, December 21st, to allow First Energy to perform work in the area. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Grants Help ACM Students

Allegany College of Maryland received two grants to assist current Students through the college’s Pantry that provides food, personal care and hygiene items and school supplies.  ACM is now a Swipe Out Hunger campus partner. Swipe Out Hunger is a nonprofit that addresses hunger among college students.  23% of students on college campuses are food insecure, lacking access to quality food.  Kristin Kehrwald of ACM says the grant will help more students….    

Maryland Republicans React To Budget Outlook

Maryland House and Senate Republicans released a statement regarding the state’s FY 2025 Budget Outlook and the recommendations of the Spending Affordability Committee. House Minority Leader Jason Buckel said, “the budget outlook is sobering. A knee-jerk reaction from some Democrats in the General Assembly has been to call for higher taxes. This is something that Marylanders simply cannot afford.”  Buckel went on to say in the statement that it is time to make difficult decisions to put Maryland on a stronger fiscal path that does not overburden tax payers.

Theft Arrest at Martins Food Market on Park Street

On December 18th Officers from the Cumberland Police Department (CPD) were dispatched to Martins Food Market on Park Street for a theft. Upon arrival and through further investigation it was learned that Angela Francine Growden did order items on-line for pick up. Upon arrival she gathered more items then ordered without paying for them. She was placed under arrested and issued one Maryland Uniform Criminal Citation for theft less than $1,0000. Commissioner Says Nothing Improper About Baseball Game Invite

Allegany County Commission President Dave Caporale spoke to WCBC recently about allegations of unfair treatment among the bidders on the Sedgwick Street housing development.  Max Green of the West Side Neighborhood Association directed questions to the commissioners at their latest meeting regarding representatives from D.R.
