Washington Monthly magazine has released its annual college rankings guide. Rankings are based on how the colleges help middle- and working-class students get ahead, encourage democratic participation and service, and produce scholars and scholarship driving economic growth. ICE Partnership Arrests 12 In West Virginia
The West Virginia Governor’s office announced this week that State Police along with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement arrested 12 individuals for immigration violations over a 2-day period. Law enforcement apprehended the undocumented immigrants during traffic stops in Fayette County. All those arrested were found to have entered or remained in the United States illegally and were taken to the South Central Regional Jail in Charleston.
Ridership on Scenic Railroad Sees Yearly Increases
Each year, ridership increases on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Many are families that come more than once to ride the rails. Whether it’s visits throughout the year or for seasonal rides like the Polar Express, Executive Director Wes Heinz says the experience makes a mark on the guest’s lives… “Every year we get letters from kids and from families about the impact of Polar Express and oftentimes just of the train on their lives. Bench Warrant Service
On Thursday, September 25th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested William Joseph Dibuono, 57, of Lonaconing MD. Dibuono was arrested on five active Bench Warrants issued by the Allegany County District Court on September 24th, 2025. The warrants allege Dibuono failed to appear in District Court on that date for previous charges that include CDS Possession, trespassing, CDS paraphernalia possession. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held on $500 bond. Allegany Girls Win Battle of Unbeatens
Allegany scored two second half goals Thursday afternoon to defeat Mountain Ridge, 2-0, in a match of two previously unbeaten and unscored upon teams. Madalyn Bucy scored Allegany's first goal on a penalty kick and Harper Farrell was credited with the second goal. Allegany is now 7-0-1 on the season and Mountain Ridge falls to 7-1.
Local Republican Leaders Endorse Moore
The mayors of two of Western Maryland’s most Republican areas have announced support for the re-election of Democratic Governor Wes Moore. Lonaconing Mayor Jack Coburn and Westernport’s Judy Hamilton have both been quoted in a release from the Moore-Miller campaign, throwing their support behind the governor. Quotes from both mayors outline the fact that although they do not always see eye-to-eye, Moore has remembered the small towns of the state rather than just the big cities.
State’s Teacher Apprenticeship Program To Launch
Maryland is launching a Registered Teacher Apprenticeship program to help with the state’s educator shortage. Aspiring teachers will be able to begin work in classrooms while they earn their college degree and teaching license. Apprentices will have access to flexible course offerings and be able to earn credits for on-the-job training through partnerships with colleges and universities. The program is starting in Washington and Caroline counties in early 2026.

President Trump abruptly canceled a scheduled meeting with Democratic leaders this week seeking a solution to avoid a potential government shutdown. Majority of School Buildings Past Lifespan
A recent report from the Maryland Comptroller’s office showed that only 20% of public school buildings in the state were rated “like new” while Allegany and Garrett were among five counties with buildings well past their lifespan.
