Carla Jean Minnick, 54 of Buffalo Mills, PA was arrested on a District Court Bench Warrant for Violation Of Probation. Her original conviction was for CDS Administration Equipment Possession/Distribution. A bail of $2,500 was posted in this case. Margaret Grace Yates (Wilhelm), 40 of Cumberland was arrested on a Circuit Court Bench Warrant for Violation of Pretrial Release. Her original conviction was for Theft: $1,500 to Under $25,000. She is currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center pending a bail review in Circuit Court.

New Railfan Camera Goes Live Today

A new Virtual Railfan camera is going live in South Cumberland. This camera is a partnership with the Cumberland Outdoor Club, Skypacket Network, WCBC Radio and Virtual Railfan. The South Cumberland camera overlooks the Cumberland terminal subdivision and will feature CSX and Amtrak trains and occasional views of Western Maryland Scenic Railroad trains crossing the Potomac River. TRESPASSING ARREST

On October 5th, 2023 at approximately 11:21 p.m. officers from the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of E. Industrial Boulevard and Virginia Avenue for a trespassing complaint. Upon arrival an officer learned that a male had just jumped onto the front of a train engine owned by CSX. The male then began to taunt CSX employees, while he was still on the train. The officer was given a description and possible location of the suspect. Offices began to search for the suspect, and he was located still in the vicinity of CSX. CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On October 5th, 2023 the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Rodney Lee Smith. The summons was issued as a result of a littering complaint made, after a mattress and box springs were dumped at a business, in the area of N. Centre Street. An investigation was conducted into the illegal dumping. The officer reviewed video surveillance, and was able to positively identify Smith in the surveillance video.  Charges were applied for on Smith, and he signed for his copy of the summons and was released pending trial at District Court. Citizens Speak Against Developer For Old Allegany Site

Before one shovel has been lifted on new housing at the former Allegany High School site, several citizens showed up at the Allegany County Commissioner’s meeting to disagree with the choice of developer for the project.  D.R. Balance Needed When Helping Area Homeless

It would seem that the City of Cumberland would welcome help dealing with the issues of homelessness and vagrancy throughout the area.  While help is indeed needed, sometimes that help can have different effects than intentioned.  City Resident Dave Biser brought up the issue of people who are spending their time at Riverside Park, some carrying weapons. Mayor Ray Morriss agrees that some kind of action needs to be taken, but groups that attempt to help may be doing more harm than good…  

Brook Lane Opens Cumberland Facility

A grant from the Rural Maryland Prosperity Investment Fund has enabled Brook Lane Mental Health to open a new out-patient facility in Cumberland.  Primarily providing child and adolescent mental health services, the facility will also provide some adult treatment. The new location will do evaluations, counseling, and psychiatry care.  CEO Jeffrey O’Neal said the Cumberland clinic will provide much-needed services to the citizens of Allegany County. Brook Lane’s main campus in Hagerstown is home to the second largest private mental health facility in the state.
