Scheduled for March 4, hundreds of brave souls will run into the cold waters of Lake Habeeb at Rocky Gap State Park to raise money for local programs supporting the developmentally disabled, including the Special Olympics of Allegany County, Friends Aware, public and private school programs and Boy Scout Troop 89. New signs, gates on Bay Bridge to give drivers earlier warning of lane closures
Starting next week, drivers heading to the Eastern Shore over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge will encounter a new automatic lane closure system during two-way traffic on the westbound span of the bridge. WTOP reports the system will roll out March 6 near U.S. 50/U.S. 301, the Maryland Transportation Authority announced. This system is aimed at improving safety for motorists and road crews by using overhead signals and automatic gates to close lanes, instead of barrels. The authority said it started developing the implementation of the new lane closure on the Eastern Shore of the bridge in November.
Road work will impact Broadway Street, Maryland and Woodside avenues
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department would like to notify the public on the behalf of Columbia Gas of Maryland that on March 6th to March 10th there will be construction performed on Broadway Street, between Maryland Ave and Woodside Avenue. In addition, there will be work performed at the intersection of Broadway Street and Maryland Avenue. Between the hours of 7AM and 5PM, this section of Broadway Street will be closed to all traffic. Maryland AG says Florida Governor DeSantis Is Violating Students’ Right to Privacy
Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown expressed grave concern over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ request for information about Florida public university students receiving gender-affirming care. In a letter to Governor DeSantis, a coalition of 16 Attorneys General caution that his request for this information will intimidate university administrators, health care providers, staff, and students and could prevent them from providing or accessing necessary, and often lifesaving, medical care. The Attorneys General also have a strong interest in protecting the rights of the many students and staff members in the Florida state university system who are residents of their respective states….
Troopers Uncover Suspected Heroin, Fentanyl, Cocaine Following Traffic Stop
Maryland State Police arrested a man Wednesday afternoon after uncovering suspected heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine following a traffic stop in Washington County. The accused is identified as Orlando Rogers Jr., 38, of Baltimore, Maryland. Rogers is charged with felony drug distribution, possession with intent to distribute fentanyl/heroin, mix, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine, resisting arrest and other related criminal charges. Shortly before 1 p.m. on Wednesday, a trooper from the Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barrack conducted a traffic stop on a Nissan Versa, traveling westbound on Route 40 (Dual Highway) at Day Road for speeding….
Students Protest proposed cut to tuition program
Students from private schools around Maryland protested at the State House Thursday to call on Gov. Wes Moore and state lawmakers not to cut funding to a tuition program. The BOOST program, Broadening Options & Opportunities for Students Today, started under then-Gov. Larry Hogan's administration, gives students from low-income families scholarships to attend private an religious schools. WBAL reports that Moore has proposed to cut 20% of the program with plans to eliminate it once the 3,200 students currently enrolled in the program graduate.
