Marcellus Shale Issue Still A Point Of Contention

One of the more contentious battles in Annapolis over the next 90 days may well focus on the controversial issue of fracking and Marcellus shale. There are many lawmakers who have serious environmental concerns about the process; while others- particularly those officials in Western Maryland who are excited about the major new revenue stream that would result for one of the state’s most economically distressed regions. The Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission met in Annapolis earlier this week and a group of legislators are pushing for a legislative moratorium on hydraulic fracturing. State Senator George Edwards, a member of the commission, believes the proposed legislative moratorium is nothing more than a stahl tactic. He says those blocking the process are doing so for political, not environmental reasons….
