MD Students Back To School Following Labor Day Holiday

Kids in Allegany and Garrett counties wrapped up their summer vacations last week- but for most Maryland students the new school year began this week- following Labor Day.  It was the first school year since Governor  Larry Hogan's executive order requiring public schools to start after Labor Day. The Baltimore Sun reports four Baltimore schools designated as failing received a waiver to start a week earlier. Allegany and Garrett county schools in western Maryland were also allowed to start early because they historically have closed more often for inclement weather.  State superintendent Karen Salmon calls opening day one of the best days of the school year and she provided a brief state of the school system update…
