Arrest Warrant Served
On Saturday, April 26, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Lyle Butts. The warrant was issued as a result of Butts violating the terms of his probation. Butts was originally convicted of possessing a controlled dangerous substance on November 2, 2024. Butts was located and placed under arrest. He was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center, where he was held without bond pending his trial. Arrest: Lyle Brandon Butts, Age 36, Cumberland, Maryland. Warrants: Violation of Probation (CDS Possession not Marijuana).
New Locations for Naloxone Vending Machines
AHEC West has added two new points for naloxone distribution in Allegany County. One site will be a vending machine at Concerted Care Group on Industrial Boulevard. A second site will be in Frostburg at Jamaica Junction on Main Street. Naloxone, or NARCAN, is a nasal spray that reverses the effect of opioid overdoses. AHEC West also distributes naloxone at the Possibility Shop on Baltimore Street in Cumberland. There is no charge for the medication.
Board Of Public Works Approves Local Funding
During the most recent Board of Public Works meeting, Maryland’s Comptroller, Governor and Treasurer approved funding of $950 million dollars for projects across the state, including several in Western Maryland. The BPW approved a new five-year contract with Aladdin Food Management for food services at Frostburg State University. The company will be doing facility renovations. UPMC was awarded a five-year contract for student counseling and crisis management at FSU. $87,000 was awarded for field upgrades at the PVAA complex in Cresaptown.
Commanders Confirm Move Back To D.C.
The Washington Commanders are coming home to D.C. At a press conference this morning, DC Mayor Muriel Bowzer was joined by the football team’s owner Josh Harris, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and various Washington football icons. Plans are for a new stadium along with housing, multipurpose areas, and retail space. A 67,000 seat stadium will be built along the Anacostia River. Marshall Street hit-and-run Arrest
On Friday, April 25, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Marshall Street for the report of a hit-and-run investigation. Upon arrival, Officers observed the damage to the victim's vehicle and were provided with a description of the suspect vehicle. Later that day, Officers located the vehicle in the area of Patterson Avenue. The vehicle was operated by Misty McDonald. Once the investigation was completed, it was determined that McDonald was the operator of the vehicle at the time of the hit-and-run. Washington Street Assault Arrest
On Sunday, April 27, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 100 Block of Washington Street for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, Officers were able to observe the active disturbance inside the residence. Through the investigation, it was learned that an assault had occurred. As a result, Matthew O'Reilly was placed under arrest. He was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center, where he was released on an unsecured $5,000 bond pending his trial. West Industrial Boulevard Traffic Arrest
On Saturday, April 26, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of West Industrial Boulevard for the report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival at the scene, Officers learned that a male, who was later identified as Jacob Lindsey, was walking down the center of the roadway. Witnesses advised that the first vehicle struck Lindsey and was then subsequently rear-ended by another vehicle. Bake Shop Owner Getting Special Day of Recognition
Visitors from far and wide will be coming to downtown Cumberland on May 3 to honor Roger Lantz, longtime owner of M&M Bake Shop. Becky McClarran of the Downtown Cumberland Business Association told WCBC News that there would be baked goods, games, and a big card for everyone to sign for Lantz who retired and closed the bakery in March. American Lung Association Fails Maryland in “State of the Air” Report
Most Maryland counties posted worse results for both ozone smog and fine particle pollution than last year’s findings – this from the latest “State of the Air” report from the American Lung Association. Smoke from large wildfires in Canada contributed to the poorer air quality. The state is ranked second-worst in the Mid-Atlantic for ozone smog. Kecia Atta, from the ALA, said pollutants pose a risk to health… “Long term exposure to these types of days has been show to increase the incidents of asthma, respiratory harm, worsened asthma, worsened COPD, inflammation, development of asthma in children.”
SPARC Already Planning Expansion
Even before they’ve moved in to new offices at the Rosenbaum building, aerospace contractor SPARC is thinking about growth. During an update from Cumberland Economic Development to the City Council, CEDC director Matt Miller said the company anticipates exceeding the number of employees in their initial hiring proposal before the office is scheduled to open in May… “I think it’s only just begun with SPARC; we’re already talking about a potential phase two and other opportunities that they might be able to bring to the city.”
