Triton Construction permitted to begin work at 6AM on Baltimore Street
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department would like to notify the public that Triton Construction will begin working each day at 6am on the Baltimore Street Access project starting on Monday, July 31st, to facilitate the performance of necessary construction activities for the downtown project. The contractor will also be permitted to work on Saturdays and Sundays from 6am-2pm with prior written approval by the City Engineer. Baltimore Street Bridge will be closed to thru traffic on Monday
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Carl Belt Inc., would like to notify the public that the Baltimore Street Bridge will be closed to thru traffic on Monday, July 31st, at 6pm through Tuesday, August 1st, at 3pm in order to perform necessary construction for the bridge. A detour will be in place to direct vehicles around the site. The Engineering Department will issue further notification when night time closures are scheduled and when traffic patterns change. Alderson Broaddus University Reaches Agreement with City of Philippi
Alderson Broaddus University announced that it has reached a joint agreement with the City of Philippi to settle its outstanding balance of over $773,000. The University said that it would present a check to the city for $67,000 next Monday to start the process. After the initial payment, the city and school have worked out a structured plan for the school to make regular payments toward resolving its remaining balance.
Violation of Pre-Trial Release Conditions Leads to Arrest
On Friday, July 28th, 2023, The Cumberland Police arrested Javis Chayton Bohrer, 22, of Cumberland MD. Bohrer was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on July 25th. The warrant alleges Bohrer violated pre-trial release conditions that stemmed from a charge of accessory after the fact-1st degree murder. Bohrer was taken before the District Court Commissioner for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Arrest on Willowbrook Road after Motor Vehicle Theft Attempt
On Friday, July 28th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police responded to the 12000 block of Willowbrook Rd for the report of an attempted m/v theft. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the vehicle owner. The owner stated they had observed the trunk of their vehicle open in the parking lot. Upon making a check of the vehicle, they discovered a male subject next to the vehicle attempting to remove the license plate. The suspect was confronted by the owner and the police was contacted. Piedmont Municipal Water Must Make Changes
The Piedmont Municipal Water Department is not a failing or distressed utility, but it must make a number of changes to bring itself into full compliance, the Public Service Commission of West Virginia decided Friday. However, the Commission warned, “there is a real concern that Piedmont may soon become a distressed or failing utility” if it does not address issues noted in the PSC order. The Commission told the town to file regular updated reports on its progress. “Based on the testimony and evidence provided, Piedmont does not currently meet the threshold of a distressed utility,” the PSC ruled. The regular meeting of the Mayor and City Council of Cumberland scheduled for August 2nd, 2023 has been canceled. The next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 15 at 6:15 p.m. Accordingly, the Public Hearing advertised for August 2nd regarding Charter Amendment 152 will be rescheduled, with notice regarding the new hearing date to be published in the newspaper.

Justice Calls For Delay on Alderson Broaddus Action
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice issued a statement calling on the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission to delay an emergency meeting scheduled for Friday during which they are expected to take action against Alderson Broaddus University. Justice is calling for the delay so he can meet with the HEPC, university leadership, and legislative leaders to make sure every single avenue is exhausted before drastic action is taken. He said “it is simply too important, not only for this prestigious university and its alumni, but also for the entire community of Philippi and Barbour County.”
